Feasibility of Combining Deep Learning and RGB Images Obtained by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Leaf Area Index Estimation in Rice

Tomoaki Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: In this study, a DL model using RGB images for LAI estimation was compared to other methods, showing higher accuracy than traditional PCA and CI-based regression models, and comparable performance to VI-based regression models. The results suggest that DL with RGB images from a UAV can serve as an alternative method for rice LAI estimation.

Summary: Accurate estimation of winter wheat leaf area index (LAI) using UAV hyperspectral imagery is crucial for crop growth monitoring and precision agriculture. This study utilized different algorithms to select characteristic bands related to LAI, with the Xgboost model using nine consecutive characteristic bands selected by the CARS_SPA algorithm as input showing the best performance. The results provide reference and technical support for nondestructive and rapid estimation of winter wheat LAI using UAV.

Remote estimation of leaf area index (LAI) with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imaging for different rice cultivars throughout the entire growing season

Yan Gong et al.

Summary: This study explores a simple method to remotely estimate Leaf Area Index (LAI) of different rice cultivars using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imaging. Results show a significant hysteresis in the relationship between Vegetation Indices (VI) and LAI in rice, which can be reduced by using the product of VI and canopy height to estimate LAI with errors under 24% throughout the entire growing season. The model developed in this study combines remotely sensed canopy height and VI information, improving rice LAI estimation at both pre- and post-heading stages without requiring re-parameterization.

Combining Spectral and Texture Features of UAV Images for the Remote Estimation of Rice LAI throughout the Entire Growing Season

Kaili Yang et al.

Summary: Leaf area index (LAI) estimation is crucial for canopy structure analysis and yield prediction, with the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) being a promising solution due to its flexibility. While vegetation index (VI) is widely used for LAI estimation, a novel method combining texture and spectral information shows better predictive ability and cost-effectiveness for monitoring crop growth.

Summary: This study reviewed the primary LAI retrieval methods using point cloud data obtained by discrete airborne LiDAR scanner (DALS), including the empirical regression and the gap fraction (GF) model. It was found that LiDAR penetration indexes (LPIs) are the most efficient proxy variables, and further research is needed to correct the impact from the clumping effect and woody material on LAI estimation.

Mapping Leaf Area Index of restored mangroves using WorldView-2 imagery in Perancak Estuary, Bali, Indonesia

Muhammad Kamal et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to restore and rehabilitate mangrove forests using Leaf Area Index (LAI) as an indicator for monitoring their growth. The study applied a semi-empirical approach to estimate LAI using WorldView-2 imagery, showing that planted mangrove forests with Rhizophora sp. domination had higher LAI values. This indicates that LAI is a useful tool for assessing the bio-physical conditions of mangroves and monitoring restoration activities.
