Flooding trends and their impacts on coastal communities of Western Cape Province, South Africa

Kaitano Dube et al.

Summary: Extreme weather events induced by climate change have significantly increased in the past decade, particularly in coastal cities where there is a notable rise in flooding frequency. The risks of flooding are exacerbated by a combination of human and natural factors, such as extreme rainfall, poor drainage, and land pollution. Comprehensive measures are urgently needed to address these risks and mitigate the impacts on human settlements in South Africa.

Twenty-first century droughts have not increasingly exacerbated fire season severity in the Brazilian Amazon

R. Libonati et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the connection between forest fires and deforestation in the Amazon region did not weaken as previously thought, and the exacerbating effect of drought on fire season severity did not increase over time. The dry conditions in 2015 had the least impact on fire activity compared to other severe droughts in the twenty-first century.

Spatial Variability of Rainfall Trends in Sri Lanka from 1989 to 2019 as an Indication of Climate Change

Niranga Alahacoon et al.

Summary: The study reveals a significant increase in annual rainfall in all climatic zones of Sri Lanka from 1989 to 2019, with the wet zone showing the maximum increase and the semi-arid zone showing the minimum increase. There is a potential increased risk of floods in the southern and western provinces in the future, while the eastern and southeastern districts may face severe droughts during the northeastern monsoon. It is recommended to implement effective drought and flood management strategies to reduce the risk levels.

Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

Cecilia Blundo et al.

Summary: Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth, and a global community is working together to improve our understanding of them through diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. Through this collaboration, significant scientific discoveries are being made, changing the landscape of tropical forest science.

A synthesis of botanical informatics for vascular plants in Africa

Hong Qian et al.

Summary: Synthesizing published botanical information, we found Africa has at least 65,414 native species of vascular plants. The completeness of species lists derived from online botanical databases at country-level or larger scales is typically >90%. In contrast, the completeness of species lists derived from geo-referenced occurrence records online varies between 36.6% and 72.1% at different spatial scales.

Assessing the Reliability of Satellite and Reanalysis Estimates of Rainfall in Equatorial Africa

Sharon E. Nicholson et al.

Summary: This article examines the reliability of satellite and reanalysis estimates of rainfall in the Congo Basin and over Lake Victoria and its catchment. The diversity of estimates is generally large, with reanalysis products showing little relationship with observed rainfall or satellite estimates. The difficulty in assessing factors governing the interannual variability of rainfall in these regions is highlighted.
