Integrated Methodological Approach for the Documentation of Marine Priority Habitats and Submerged Antiquities: Examples from the Saronic Gulf, Greece

Nikos Georgiou et al.

Summary: The increasing human activities and resource exploitation have put pressure on coastal zones and marine environments, threatening the existence of Marine Priority Habitats (MPH) and Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH). An Integrated Methodological Approach was proposed to detect and map MPH and UCH effectively, leading to the successful creation of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) maps for the Saronic Gulf.

The Battle of Lepanto Search and Survey Mission (1971-1972) by Throckmorton, Edgerton and Yalouris: Following Their Traces Half a Century Later Using Marine Geophysics

George Papatheodorou et al.

Summary: A series of marine remote sensing and ground-truth surveys were conducted at NW Gulf of Patras (W. Greece) to relocate the findings of a pioneer survey from 1971 and interpret newly collected data in the light of modern developments in marine geosciences. The study also detailed the site formation processes of two modern shipwrecks, detected mound clusters and individual mounds, and found noticeable seafloor morphological features around the wreck sites.

Spatio-Seasonal Hypoxia/Anoxia Dynamics and Sill Circulation Patterns Linked to Natural Ventilation Drivers, in a Mediterranean Landlocked Embayment: Amvrakikos Gulf, Greece

Nikos Georgiou et al.

Summary: Amvrakikos Gulf is a Mediterranean landlocked embayment suffering from natural and human-induced hypoxia/anoxia events, with seasonal surveys revealing complex water circulation patterns and dissolved oxygen distribution. The study found that horizontal density gradients strongly affect anoxia reduction and seafloor oxygenation, while complex geomorphology contributes to the persistence of low DO conditions in certain areas. This research provides valuable insights for future ecosystem management plans and coastal ecosystem studies.

Gas Seepage-Induced Features in the Hypoxic/Anoxic, Shallow, Marine Environment of Amfilochia Bay, Amvrakikos Gulf (Western Greece)

Stavroula Kordella et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of a gas-induced pockmark group and hypoxic environment in Amfilochia Bay, which is affected by tectonism. Methane isotopic analysis indicated different sources of gases. Geophysical data suggested that the protrusion mound previously thought to be a submarine volcano may be a mud volcano.
