Integration of close-range underwater photogrammetry with inspection and mesh processing software: a novel approach for quantifying ecological dynamics of temperate biogenic reefs

Daniele Ventura et al.

Summary: The research developed a SfM-based photogrammetry method coupled with inspection and mesh processing software to estimate ecological parameters of underwater worm colonies constructed by Sabellaria alveolata. Through non-destructive 3D modeling and mesh analysis, the study analyzed the morphological evolution of worm colonies in temperate reef regions.

Summary: Benthic habitat mapping in the Polish Exclusive Zone of the Southern Baltic was conducted using high-resolution hydroacoustic surveys, resulting in the development of an automatic classification workflow based on geomorphometric features and supervised classifiers. The study highlighted the significance of specific geomorphometric features in improving classification performance and demonstrated the potential for the findings to be applied in extensive areas worldwide.

Photogrammetry Using UAV-Mounted GNSS RTK: Georeferencing Strategies without GCPs

Martin Stroner et al.

Summary: This study examines systematic elevation errors in georeferencing UAV-acquired imagery without using ground control points (GCPs), and proposes strategies for eliminating this error. By conducting multiple flights at different altitudes and image acquisition axes, the research demonstrates a linear dependence between focal length deviation and systematic elevation error, and shows that a combination of two flights with different image acquisition axes can reduce the error to less than 0.03 meters. Overall, georeferencing without GCPs is a feasible alternative to traditional methods.

Musical Chairs on Temperate Reefs Species Turnover and Replacement Within Functional Groups Explain Regional Diversity Variation in Assemblages Associated With Honeycomb Worms

Alexandre Muller et al.

Summary: Reef-building species such as the honeycomb worm play a key role in increasing biodiversity in marine habitats, but may also compete with other species. Diversity levels remain constant along the European coast, with taxonomic composition varying across sites primarily in response to sea surface temperatures and sediment content. Functional composition of assemblages is similar regardless of taxonomic composition, indicating that the reefs may act as biological filters.

Low altitude spatial assessment and monitoring of intertidal seagrass meadows beyond the visible spectrum using a remotely piloted aircraft system

Subhash Chand et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of a multi-rotor and a multispectral sensor for spatial assessment and monitoring of seagrass meadows in Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, New Zealand, achieving a high overall accuracy of 95% and a Kappa Coefficient of 0.81. The technique used can provide valuable insights for researchers to observe local changes and identify drivers of change, improving our understanding of seagrass spatial dynamics for conservation and planning.
