Flax/basalt/E-glass Fibers Reinforced Epoxy Composites with Enhanced Mechanical Properties

M. A. Abd El-Baky et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of flax/basalt/E-glass fibers reinforced epoxy composites were studied in this research, which investigated the effects of fiber relative amounts and stacking sequence on the tensile, flexural, and impact properties. The results showed that replacing partial laminas with basalt and/or glass fiber reinforced epoxy laminas could enhance the tensile, flexural, and impact strengths. Additionally, incorporating high strength fibers to the outer layers of the composite improved flexural and impact resistances, while having the opposite effect on tensile properties.

Effect of stacking sequence on the performance of hybrid natural/synthetic fiber reinforced polymer composite laminates

Subrata C. Das et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of stacking sequence on natural fiber, synthetic fiber, and hybrid composites, finding that neat glass/polyester laminates exhibited better mechanical performance than others, with glass fiber hybridization significantly influencing properties. Additionally, gamma irradiation improved the mechanical properties of the composites by increasing tensile strength, bending strength, tensile modulus, and bending modulus for each composite type.

Dynamic-Mechanical and Decomposition Properties of Flax/Basalt Hybrid Laminates Based on an Epoxidized Linseed Oil Polymer

Dana Luca Motoc et al.

Summary: This study focused on the development of flax and flax/basalt hybrid reinforced composites using epoxidized linseed oil resin, with different ratios of glutaric anhydride and maleinized linseed oil in the hardener system. The addition of glutaric anhydride resulted in hard and brittle laminates, while increasing MLO content led to a decrease in brittleness of the crosslinked resin. The thermal analysis showed shifts in glass transition temperatures and final degradation temperatures with varying MLO content.

Investigation on Flexural Behavior of Geopolymer-Based Carbon Textile/Basalt Fiber Hybrid Composite

Chi Hiep Le et al.

Summary: Experimental research on the mechanical properties of hybrid composite thin-plates composed of short basalt fibers (CBFs) and carbon textile-reinforced geomortar was conducted. The findings showed that adding CBFs with lengths of 12 mm and 24 mm improved both static and dynamic flexural strength in geomortar, but did not have a positive effect on the failure mode of the specimens. The study also highlighted the importance of the anchoring capacity of textile layers in geomortar on specimen strength, as revealed by the Charpy impact test results.

Basalt Fibre Composite with Carbon Nanomodified Epoxy Matrix under Hydrothermal Ageing

Tatjana Glaskova-Kuzmina et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of hybrid carbon nanofillers on the electrical and flexural properties for an epoxy matrix and basalt fiber reinforcing composite subjected to seasonal water absorption. Results showed minimal changes in mechanical properties after environmental ageing. Nanomodified BFRCs exhibited slightly higher effects on flexural characteristics due to higher defectiveness. Nanocomposites showed higher electrical conductivity, with UD BFRC/NC showing significantly improved conductivity after hydrothermal ageing, enhancing damage monitoring capabilities.

Effect of Plasma Treatment on the Impact Behavior of Epoxy/Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Composites: A Preliminary Study

Maria Rosaria Ricciardi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of one-step sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) plasma treatment on the low velocity impact behavior of basalt/epoxy composites, finding that treating with SF6 plasma increases the hydrophobicity and impact resistance of the composites. Plasma-treated basalt systems showed damage in a confined area and higher impact resistance compared to untreated systems.

Comparative Failure Study of Different Bonded Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (BFRP)-AL Joints in a Humid and Hot Environment

Yisa Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of high temperature and high humidity on the bonding structure between basalt fiber-reinforced resin composite materials (BFRP) and aluminum alloy (Al) using two adhesives. It was found that Araldite (R) 2012 is more affected by moisture, while Araldite (R) 2014 has a shorter time to reach maximum water absorption. The failure strength of the joints showed different trends under high temperature aging, with Araldite (R) 2014 joints increasing in strength initially before decreasing, while Araldite (R) 2012 joints showed a continuous decrease.
