Experimental assessment of low velocity impact damage in flax fabrics reinforced biocomposites by coupled high-speed imaging and DIC analysis

Karthik Ram Ramakrishnan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact behavior of flax fabrics-epoxy and commingled flax-polypropylene composite plates, using low velocity impact tests and high-speed imaging coupled with DIC analysis. A crack-tracking algorithm is implemented to identify crack initiation and propagation, while force-displacement histories and high-speed camera results are compared to identify different modes of damage and critical energy for complete penetration. This method can effectively depict the events leading to the breakage of biocomposites and be a valuable tool for investigating the impact behavior of other materials.

Microstructural investigation and hole quality evaluation in S2/FM94 glass-fibre composites under dry and cryogenic conditions

Khaled Giasin et al.

Summary: A new environmentally friendly cryogenic cooling technique was used for drilling S2/FM94 glass fibre reinforced epoxy composite in a liquid nitrogen bath. The study aimed to investigate the effects of drilling parameters and cryogenic cooling on cutting forces, surface roughness, hardness, and delamination factor at hole entry and exit sides. The results showed that spindle speed and cryogenic cooling had the most significant influence on cutting forces and surface roughness, while cryogenic cooling had the most significant influence on increasing hardness and delamination size at the hole entry and exit sides.

Low-velocity impact response of tube-reinforced honeycomb sandwich structure

Yunwei Zhang et al.

Summary: By filling the honeycomb holes with metallic tubes, the load carrying capacity and impact resistance of the honeycomb sandwich structure are improved, leading to a more uniform distribution of stresses and deformations. The tube-reinforced structure absorbs impact energy more quickly and significantly reduces front face-sheet deformation.

Low velocity impact (LVI) and flexure-after-impact (FAI) behaviours of rotationally moulded sandwich structures

Abu Saifullah et al.

Summary: This study investigated the low velocity impact properties and damage propagation mechanism of rotationally moulded skin-foam-skin sandwich structures, comparing the effects of different foam material densities. The results demonstrated that sandwich structures with lower density foam material showed better impact properties and residual strength than those with higher density foam material.
