Vinylsilane-rich silicone filled by polydimethylsiloxane encapsulated carbon black particles for dielectric elastomer actuator with enhanced out-of-plane actuations

Jianjian Huang et al.

Summary: By filling polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) encapsulated carbon black (PCB) particles in a vinylsilane-rich silicone (VRS), a hybrid PCB/VRS film with enhanced mechanical and insulation properties is obtained. The hybrid film shows increased Young's modulus and dielectric permittivity compared to the pure film, leading to improved breakdown strength and reduced dielectric loss, benefiting DEA performance.

Stretchable, Soft, and Variable Stiffness Elastomer foam with Positive and Negative Piezoresistivity Enabled by Liquid Metal Inclusion

Dongkyun Cho et al.

Summary: Soft and stretchable piezoresistive composites were created by incorporating liquid metal into elastomeric foam with 3D open cell morphologies, allowing for shape reconfigurable conductive composites. Deformation of the liquid metal due to strain enables changes in electrical resistance, which can be positively and negatively manipulated by adjusting the geometries of the liquid metal in the foam. The restorative electrical activity of the composites can be reversibly manipulated by applying compressive force to the liquid metal in the elastomeric foam.

Effects of Ferroelectric Fillers on Composite Dielectric Elastomer Actuator

Stanislav Sikulskyi et al.

Summary: Integrating nano- to micro-sized dielectric fillers into elastomer matrices is a common method to enhance the performance of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). While Barium titanate is a widely used filler, calcium copper titanate (CCTO) shows potential to outperform conventional fillers, but is less studied in DEA applications. This study investigates the effects of particle loading and size on dielectric composite properties for DEAs, determining optimal filler amounts to maximize performance. Electromechanical testing of pre-stretched CCTO-composite DEAs showed improved performance over plain elastomer DEAs.
