Completely amorphous high thermal resistant copolyesters from bio-based 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid

Ang Shen et al.

Summary: Polyesters with high T-g from renewable resources are crucial for expanding their application range. A series of copolyesters, PBSF, were synthesized from BHEPS, BDO, and FDCA, with increasing BHEPS content leading to higher T-g but lower M-w. PBSF-65 was identified as a promising polyester for various applications requiring high transparency and heat resistance, with specific properties suitable for baby bottles, children's toys, kitchen appliances, and beverage packaging.

Unexpected Susceptibility of Poly(ethylene furanoate) to UV Irradiation: A Warning Light for Furandicarboxylic Acid?

Evelien Maaskant et al.

Summary: Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF) is compared to the fossil-based polyester poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in terms of UV stability, with PEF showing significant degradation including discoloration, cross linking/chain extension, and chain scission after 500 hours of UV irradiation. Additionally, UV irradiation also severely impacts the thermal properties and crystallization ability of PEF. Indications suggest that Norrish type I and II degradation reactions play a role in the UV degradation of PEF.

Unravelling the para- and ortho-benzene substituent effect on the glass transition of renewable wholly (hetero-)aromatic polyesters bearing 2,5-furandicarboxylic moieties

Sami Zaidi et al.

Summary: High-glass transition thermoplastic polymers based on 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and commercially-available catechol or hydroquinone were designed, showing high T-g and excellent thermal stability. The higher crystallinity of poly (1,4-phenylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PHQF) favored a stiffer and close packing structure, leading to better thermal properties.

Development of High-Molecular-Weight Fully Renewable Biopolyesters Based on Oxabicyclic Diacid and 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid: Promising as Packaging and Medical Materials

Haiyan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, three series of oxabicyclic renewable polyesters were synthesized via melt polymerization, with fully bio-based copolyesters obtained by incremental replacement of OBDA with FDCA. The resulting polyesters exhibited higher molecular weights, thermal stabilities, and gas barrier properties, with Tg values and biocompatibility comparable to commercial medical materials. The strategy of incorporating FDCA building blocks improved the comprehensive properties of the linear polyesters with oxabicyclic units and could be leveraged to control their roles in packaging and biomedical fields while maintaining their completely renewable nature.
