Optimizing interfacial adhesion in PBAT/PLA nanocomposite for biodegradable packaging films

Shuo Qiu et al.

Summary: The biodegradable films made of PBAT and PLA, incorporating POSS(epoxy)8 as a reactive compatibilizer, showed improved interfacial adhesion, mechanical properties, and gas permeability. The addition of POSS(epoxy)8 during film production can offer a simple strategy for producing high-performance biodegradable plastic packaging films.

Bio-Based Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)/Thermoplastic Starch Composites as a Host Matrix for Biochar Fillers

Tom Haeldermans et al.

Summary: Biochar is a less-utilized candidate for serving as an alternative filler in PHB-based composites. Adding biochar to the composites can enhance morphology and crystallization kinetics up to a certain percentage, but higher percentages of filler may have an opposite effect. Additionally, the study reveals that TPS can work as an excellent intermediary between biochar and PHB, maintaining limited degradation and reduction in molecular weight compared to the PHB/char samples. Like biochar, TPS also acts as a nucleation agent and removes the influence of biochar on the thermal stability of the composites.

Hydrophobic nanocomposites of PBAT with Cl-fn-POSS nanofiller as compostable food packaging films

Sadhasivam Balaji et al.

Summary: Antibacterial nanocomposite films of PBAT incorporated with chloropropyl functionalized POSS nanofiller were prepared, showing enhanced mechanical and barrier properties with increasing filler content. An optimum filler loading of 3 wt% was identified for maximum enhancement in tensile strength, while 1 wt% filler loading was adequate to double the tensile strength.

Green-plasticized poly(lactic acid)/nanofibrillated cellulose biocomposites with high strength, good toughness and excellent heat resistance

Linqiong Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of NFC significantly improved the strength and toughness of PLA composites, as well as enhanced their thermal stability. After ATBC plasticization, the strength and thermal properties of PLA/NFC composites did not decrease. Additionally, at 6 wt% NFC content, the strength and modulus of the prepared composites were comparable to pure PLA, with an increase in elongation and toughness by approximately 259% and 121%, respectively.

Full Bio-Based Soy Protein Isolate Film Enhanced by Chicken Feather Keratin

Xiaona Li et al.

Summary: A green and effective method was developed to prepare a fully biomass-based sustainable film by incorporating feather keratin (FK) extracted from waste chicken feathers into soy protein isolate (SPI), resulting in improved strength and toughness. The SPI/FK composite film showed significantly increased tensile strength and toughness, as well as improved thermal stability and water resistance. With a high substitution rate and biodegradability, this bio-based film provides a green and economic approach to enhancing the performance of protein-based food packaging films.

Structure-Property Relationships in Bionanocomposites for Pipe Extrusion Applications

Luigi Botta et al.

Summary: In this study, bionanocomposites based on different biodegradable polymers and two types of nanofillers were produced for irrigation pipe production. The nanofillers had a significant impact on the low-frequency rheological response, but had little effect on shear viscosity at high shear rates. Mechanical property analysis showed that the embedded nanofillers increased the elastic modulus but decreased material ductility.

Bionanocomposite Blown Films: Insights on the Rheological and Mechanical Behavior

Maria Chiara Mistretta et al.

Summary: This study developed bionanocomposites based on different biopolymers and nanoclays, aiming to produce sustainable films for packaging applications. The research found that regardless of the biopolymer matrix type, a homogeneous nanofiller dispersion was achieved, and interactions between the biopolymer and nanofiller significantly influenced the material's rheological response.

Poly(lactic acid) bio-composites containing biochar particles: Effects of fillers and plasticizer on crystallization and thermal properties

T. Haeldermans et al.

Summary: Biochar is commonly used as a filler material in biodegradable composites for its favorable thermal and mechanical properties. The study shows that as the biochar content increases in PLA/biochar composites, the thermal degradation temperature decreases, while in PLA/TPS/biochar composites, the impact of biochar is shielded by TPS. This work highlights the shielding effect TPS has on biochar and its potential for optimizing the production and biodegradability of these composites.
