Processing and properties of long recycled-carbon-fibre reinforced polypropylene

Andrea Fernandez et al.

Summary: Recycled carbon fibres were used as reinforcement material in polypropylene-based thermoplastic matrix composites prepared by injection moulding with different fibre/resin ratios. The stiffness and strength of the composites increased linearly with the fibre fraction, and fibre distribution and alignment in the injection flow contributed to the improvement of mechanical behaviour. However, further efforts are needed to enhance the interface performance of long recycled-carbon-fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites.

Recycling of polymeric composites from industrial waste by pyrolysis: Deep evaluation for carbon fibers reuse

T. R. Abdou et al.

Summary: The use of polymeric composite as reinforcement material on transport applications is increasing due to its low fuel consumption. Pyrolysis processing has been found to be the most effective method for recycling carbon fibers from discarded polymeric composites. Experimental results showed that at 550 degrees C for 1 hour, it was possible to obtain defect-free carbon fibers from the polymeric matrix.

Elucidation of damage factors to recycled carbon fibers recovered from CFRPs by pyrolysis for finding optimal recovery conditions

Toshihira Irisawa et al.

Summary: The study investigated the optimal conditions for recovering recycled carbon fiber from epoxy matrix CFRP through thermal decomposition, emphasizing the need for an oxidizing atmosphere and the impact of treatment temperature and time on fiber damage. It was found that the strength reduction of the recovered carbon fiber was influenced not only by thermal oxidative decomposition, but also by its interaction with the resin, with recovery time depending on treatment temperature and the location of the fiber in CFRP.
