Effects of nisin and EDTA on morphology and properties of thermoplastic starch and PBAT biodegradable films for meat packaging

Pattarin Leelaphiwat et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that PBAT/TPS films containing nisin and EDTA effectively inhibited lipid degradation in pork tissues, delayed meat discoloration, and preserved the quality of packaged pork. The interaction between nisin, EDTA, and polymers altered the crystallinity and barrier properties of the films, functionalizing biodegradable food packaging to inactivate microorganisms.

Morphology and permeability of bio-based poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) blend films control shelf-life of packaged bread

Nattinee Bumbudsanpharoke et al.

Summary: Blending PBAT and PBS modified the morphology and permeability of bio-based films, while blending with LLDPE resulted in incompatibility. LLDPE/PBAT films had lower T-alpha than neat PBAT and LLDPE, while T-alpha of PBAT/PBS blends decreased with increasing PBS content, indicating diverse polymer compatibility and molecular mobility.

Development of starch-based peelable coating for edible packaging

Thitarat Phinainitisatra et al.

Summary: This study investigated the properties and stability of starch-based peelable coating film layers using mould dipping. Different ratios of rice starch (RS) and hydroxypropyl cassava starch (HS) were examined for their effects on fluid rheology and film properties. Results showed that HS provided flexibility and stability, while RS improved the formability of the peeled shells, influencing the physical, mechanical, and barrier properties of the films.

Edible packaging from hydroxypropyl thermoplastic cassava starch, agar and maltodextrin blends produced by cast extrusion

Phanwipa Wongphan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different degrees of substitution of hydroxypropyl cassava starch with agar and maltodextrin on the microstructure and properties of edible packaging films. The findings suggested that higher DS starch and agar improved extrusion processability, while maltodextrin increased plasticization and reduced network strength, affecting the overall performance of the films. The combination of agar and maltodextrin also influenced the water vapor and oxygen permeability of the films, showing potential for enhancing the properties of the packaging materials.

Phatthranit Klinmalai et al.

Summary: Incorporating carvacrol into biodegradable polymers can produce functional sustainable packaging materials that prolong the shelf-life of food. The research shows that carvacrol-plasticized films have dense matrices and increased crystalline fractions, reducing permeability, delaying fungal growth, and increasing the shelf-life of packaged bread and cake.

Jane Wangprasertkul et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the incorporation of 3% and 6% sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate in poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) and thermoplastic starch blends can produce antimicrobial biodegradable packaging materials. Blends containing 6% PS formed homogeneous film microstructures with the highest transparency, mechanical and barrier properties, effectively delaying the growth of Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus sp. while reducing total viable count, yeast, and mold.

Ethylene scavenging properties from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-TiO2 and gelatin-TiO2 nanocomposites on polyethylene supports for fruit application

Jessica de Matos Fonseca et al.

Summary: Various technologies have been proposed to preserve fruits and prevent postharvest losses, among which the degradation of ethylene produced by fruits using TiO2 photocatalysis has shown promising results in delaying fruit ripening. This paper introduced a new application of biopolymers-TiO2 nanocomposites to extend the shelf-life of fruits, showing potential in fruit postharvest application. The study evaluated the photocatalytic properties of nanocomposite films prepared with gelatin and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose matrices loaded with 1 wt% TiO2, with gelatin-TiO2 dispersion applied as a coating on expanded polyethylene foamnets demonstrating higher ethylene degradation efficiency per photocatalytic area.
