Ali Mohebi et al.

Summary: The combination of CIDS microscopy with a phasor map approach provides an intuitive view of sample organization and the presence of different molecular species in the illumination volume. The phasor map method has the potential to pave the way for the analysis of large data sets.

Discrete dipole approximation method for electromagnetic scattering by particles in an absorbing host medium

Jian Dong et al.

Summary: In this work, the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method for electromagnetic (EM) scattering by arbitrary particles in an absorbing host medium is developed and validated. The study reveals that elongated particles are more likely to produce negative extinction effects, which is supported by the distribution of the near-field electric field. The DDA method presented in this study is proven to be useful and flexible for analyzing EM scattering by particles in an absorbing host medium.

Circular intensity differential scattering of light to characterize the coronavirus particles

Muhammad Waseem Ashraf et al.

Summary: Angle-resolved circularly polarized light scattering calculations can be used to distinguish virus particles from nonvirus particles, with the scattering signature sensitive to chiral parameters that reveal information about the particles. Different electromagnetic models and parameters, such as RNA polymer changes and packaging, can influence the scattering calculations and provide insights into the interaction of virus particles with light.

Enhancing Circular Dichroism Signals with Vector Beams

Lyuzhou Ye et al.

Summary: Circular dichroism (CD) is widely used for molecular chirality discrimination, but is often limited by weak signal strength. This study proposes using azimuthally and radially polarized vector beams to probe CD spectra, resulting in significantly enhanced signal intensity. The enhancement factor is independent of molecular properties and can be increased by reducing the path length of the sample cuvette and the interaction cross section between the light beam and molecular sample. The novel CD spectroscopy proposed is feasible with current optical technology.

Phasor approach of Mueller matrix optical scanning microscopy for biological tissue imaging

Aymeric Le Gratiet et al.

Summary: Mueller matrix microscopy combined with a phasor approach provides an easier and direct interpretation of retardance images in birefringent materials without mathematical assumptions about the sample structure, yielding comparable results to LC decomposition. By validating this approach through numerical simulations, it is shown to access localized structural information and determine birefringent parameters at the microscopic level simply. This novel method is applied to typical biological tissues for biomedical diagnosis.

Complete structural characterization of single carbon nanotubes by Rayleigh scattering circular dichroism

Fengrui Yao et al.

Summary: Non-invasive, high-throughput spectroscopic techniques can identify the chiral indices of carbon nanotubes down to the single-tube level. However, optical methods have failed to accurately characterize the handedness of single nanotubes due to weak chiroptical signals. By using Rayleigh scattering circular dichroism, the complete structure identification of single nanotubes in terms of both chiral indices and handedness has been successfully demonstrated. This method enhances the nanotube's chiroptical signal significantly, enabling exploration of handedness-related functionality of single nanotubes.

Accurate and fast modeling of scattering from random arrays of nanoparticles using the discrete dipole approximation and angular spectrum method

Maryam Baker et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the accuracy of the scalar angular spectrum method when combined with different light-matter interaction models for computing far-field light scattered by random arrays of nanoparticles. It finds that the most accurate model depends on the nanoparticle material and packing density.
