Acetylation of glucosyltransferases regulates Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation and virulence

Quantitative acetylome analysis reveals involvement of glucosyltransferase acetylation in Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation

Summary: The study identified the acetylome of S. mutans and compared the quantitative acetylome analysis between bacterial biofilm growth and planktonic growth. The dynamic changes of protein acetylation were quantified using TMT labeling and Kac affinity enrichment. The results showed that the acetylation of lysine in proteins varies during biofilm development, revealing a potential regulatory mechanism for glucosyltransferases function.

EpsR Negatively Regulates Streptococcus mutans Exopolysaccharide Synthesis

Summary: EpsR, a MarR family transcription factor, negatively regulates gtfB expression and exopolysaccharide production in S. mutans. Deletion of epsR led to altered colony morphology, increased water-insoluble EPS production, and upregulated GtfB protein content and activity, indicating the importance of EpsR in regulating cariogenic biofilm formation.
