Fighting COVID-19 at the Expense of Malaria in Africa: The Consequences and Policy Options

Abdullahi Tunde Aborode et al.

Summary: Malaria and COVID-19 are both major global health issues, but the COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges to the control and management of malaria, especially in low-income countries. Access to healthcare has been limited during the pandemic, and malaria interventions have been suspended, which may further exacerbate the burden of malaria.

Co-infection of malaria and early clearance of SARS-CoV-2 in healthcare workers

Niraj N. Mahajan et al.

Summary: Healthcare workers are at higher risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2 infection, and co-infection with vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue is crucial in endemic countries. A retrospective study in Mumbai showed that the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in HCWs was 13%, with security guards having the highest prevalence. HCWs with co-infection of malaria had faster viral clearance compared to those without malaria.

Summary: This study examined the clinical features and outcomes of COVID-19 in very elderly patients over 80 years old, revealing a higher mortality rate in this age group due to multiple comorbidities. Patients from long-stay residential care homes were also found to be more susceptible to severe manifestations of the disease.
