Long-term field-realistic exposure to a next-generation pesticide, flupyradifurone, impairs honey bee behaviour and survival

Simone Tosi et al.

Summary: The study highlights the potential underestimation of the long-term impacts of the butenolide pesticide flupyradifurone on honey bees, showing negative effects on survival and behavior at field-realistic doses. This suggests the need for reassessment of pesticide risks and supports the development of a novel methodology for refined risk assessment.

Role of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits in the mode of action of neonicotinoid, sulfoximine and spinosyn insecticides in Drosophila melanogaster

Trent Perry et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the insect response to different classes of insecticides and highlights the specificity of receptor subunits in insecticide resistance. The findings provide new insights into the mode of action of insecticides and reveal a strong conservation of subunit targets across different insect species.

A toxicogenomics approach reveals characteristics supporting the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) safety profile of the butenolide insecticide flupyradifurone

Julian Haas et al.

Summary: Flupyradifurone, a novel butenolide insecticide, has low toxicity to western honey bees due to the non-toxic metabolites of internalized compound and the lack of high-affinity binding to honey bee nAChRs. The detoxification of flupyradifurone in honey bees is mainly mediated by P450 enzymes CYP6AQ1, CYP9Q2, and CYP9Q3. The azole fungicides prochloraz and propiconazole act as strong inhibitors of these P450 enzymes, showing highly synergistic effects in combination with flupyradifurone in laboratory tests.
