Coastal eutrophication drives acidification, oxygen loss, and ecosystem change in a major oceanic upwelling system

Faycal Kessouri et al.

Summary: Global change is causing warming, acidification, and oxygen loss in the Southern California Bight, exacerbated by the discharge of anthropogenically enhanced nutrients from a coastal population of 23 million people. Through simulations, it was found that local land-based and atmospheric inputs, particularly those enhanced by human activities, drive biogeochemical changes, leading to increased phytoplankton biomass, primary production, and subsurface respiration rates in the coastal waters during summer.

High-Resolution Nonhydrostatic Outfall Plume Modeling: Cross-Flow Validation

Minna Ho et al.

Summary: This study used a high-resolution nonhydrostatic ROMS model to investigate the dynamics of marine outfall discharge. Results showed that the model performed well in simulating effluent dynamics under cross-flow conditions. The model's sensitivity to changes in horizontal effluent input parameterization was relatively low.

A baseline of terrestrial freshwater and nitrogen fluxes to the Southern California Bight, USA

Summary: Time series were compiled for terrestrial nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, iron, and silica fluxes to the Southern California Bight. The study found that point source discharges are the dominant nitrogen source, with wastewater treatment upgrades reducing organic nitrogen loads and inorganic nitrogen loads holding constant.

Evaluation of high-resolution atmospheric and oceanic simulations of the California Current System

Summary: This paper presents a 16-year hindcast solution of the California Current System using a coupled physical and biogeochemical model along the U.S. West Coast. The model is validated against various fields and shows good agreement with observational data. The simulation highlights the importance of high-resolution atmospheric and oceanic models for accurately representing oceanic processes and interactions.

Dataset of terrestrial fluxes of freshwater, nutrients, carbon, and iron to the Southern California Bight, U.S.A.

Martha Sutula et al.

Summary: The Southern California Bight is an upwelling-dominated embayment on the U.S. West Coast that receives discharges of anthropogenically-enhanced materials from wastewater treatment plants and coastal rivers. A time series dataset from 1971-2017 for large wastewater treatment plants and 1997-2017 for small wastewater treatment plants and coastal rivers was assembled, including constituents like nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon. Research studies and government databases were used to compile the data with predictive models addressing unmonitored sources and data gaps.
