Interventions that prevent or reduce obesity in children from birth to five years of age: A systematic review

Katia Narzisi et al.

Summary: Childhood obesity is a growing problem worldwide, and children who are overweight or obese for a longer period of time are more likely to become obese adults. Numerous preventive interventions have been carried out globally to combat childhood obesity. Current studies mainly focus on interventions in home-based, preschool, multi-component interventions across settings, and healthcare settings.

Elizabeth Spoede et al.

Summary: Studies on the relationship between food insecurity and malnutrition in pediatric population in the United States have yielded inconsistent results, with some showing no clear relationship between food insecurity and underweight, while large cross-sectional studies demonstrating a positive relationship between food insecurity and overweight/obesity. There were no clear patterns based on subpopulation.

The relationship between the home environment and child adiposity: a systematic review

Alice R. Kininmonth et al.

Summary: The home media environment shows the most consistent association with childhood adiposity, while the relationships between home food and physical activity environments with child adiposity are less consistent. Robust longitudinal research with comprehensive measures of the holistic home environment is needed to better identify factors contributing to excess weight gain in childhood.

Primary care prevention of cardiovascular risk behaviors in adolescents: A systematic review

Herve Tissot et al.

Summary: Interventions targeting smoking initiation appear to be more effective, but intervention components or intensity are not clearly associated with effectiveness. There is little evidence for specific interventions on cardiovascular risk behaviors in adolescents in primary care, mainly due to methodological limitations in studies.

A secondary analysis of the childhood obesity prevention Cochrane Review through a wider determinants of health lens: implications for research funders, researchers, policymakers and practitioners

James Nobles et al.

Summary: The study found that interventions evaluated through RCTs have mainly focused on downstream, individualistic determinants of obesity over the last 25 years, without addressing the complexity of its etiology. The findings call for a shift in focus of future research to better understand the multifactorial influences on obesity.

Harnessing technological solutions for childhood obesity prevention and treatment: a systematic review and meta-analysis of current applications

Summary: Recent technology-based interventions for the treatment of pediatric obesity have shown small effects on weight outcomes, with evidence inconclusive on the efficacy of technology-based prevention interventions. Pilot interventions, interventions delivered to the child rather than the parent, and shorter intervention durations were associated with greater treatment effects on weight outcomes.

Addressing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in COVID-19 Among School-Aged Children: Are We Doing Enough?

Arica White et al.

Summary: The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black, and non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native children and teenagers requires community-based collaborations to reduce disparities. Children from some racial and ethnic minority groups have higher prevalence of obesity, asthma, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as more frequent COVID-19 diagnoses and severe outcomes compared to non-Hispanic White counterparts. With complex root causes, organized community-based approaches are needed to achieve greater health equity and address these disparities.
