Toward environmental sustainability: how do urbanization, economic growth, and industrialization affect biocapacity in Brazil?

Zahoor Ahmed et al.

Summary: Although Brazil is rich in natural resources, the per capita biocapacity has declined significantly due to rapid economic growth and urbanization. The study reveals a U-shaped relationship between economic growth and biocapacity, indicating that urbanization is a significant driver of biocapacity loss in Brazil.

Gravity model estimates of the spatial determinants of trade, migration, and trade-and-migration policies

Rebecca Freeman et al.

Summary: Using a gravity model, this study examines the impact of distance and borders on trade, migration, and related policies, revealing three key differences between trade and migration patterns. Regional trade (freedom-of-movement) agreements have varying effects on trade (migration) depending on the distance between the countries involved. Over time, the effects of distance on trade (migration) either decrease or remain unchanged, while the effects of international borders on trade (migration) also decrease or remain unchanged.

Assessment of the linkages between ecosystem service provision and land use/land cover change in Fincha watershed, North-Western Ethiopia

Terefe Tolessa et al.

Summary: The study analyzed land use/land cover changes and their impacts on ecosystem services in the Fincha watershed over a period of three decades, identifying increases in cultivated land, water bodies, and sugar cane plantations, while decreases were seen in wetlands, forest land, and bare land. The competition and tradeoffs between subsistence farming and large-scale government projects in land use were found to influence the optimization of natural capital value.

Trade-off analyses and optimization of water-related ecosystem services (WRESs) based on land use change in a typical agricultural watershed, southern China

Jie Liang et al.

Summary: Land use change has a significant impact on ecosystem services (ESs), particularly on water-related ecosystem services (WRESs). A study in the Xiangjiang River Basin revealed that past land use change has greatly altered the relationship between water purification and other WRESs. The research provides insights into the importance of evaluating the effects of land use change on ecosystem services for better land management in the future.

Assessment of coordinative relationship between comprehensive ecosystem service and urbanization: A case study of Yangtze River Delta urban Agglomerations, China

Tonghui Ding et al.

Summary: This study explored the coordinative relationship between ecosystem services and urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomerations using the InVEST model, comprehensive evaluation index system, and coupling coordinating degree model (CCDM). The results revealed the impact of urbanization on land use/ land cover change and the deterioration of some ecosystem services, as well as the overall upward trend of urbanization levels in most cities. The coordinative relationship between CES and urbanization showed a spatial distribution pattern of higher coordination in the south and lower coordination in the north.

Assessing land use and land cover change in Los Molinos reservoir watershed and the effect on the reservoir water quality

Matias Bonansea et al.

Summary: Understanding and modelling land use and land cover change is crucial for environmental management, as human activities can have negative effects on freshwater resources. Remote sensing and GIS play a key role in assessing the drivers of LULC change and its impact on lake and reservoir water quality. This study investigated the dynamics of LULC change in the Los Molinos watershed, finding a significant increase in urbanization and agricultural activities, leading to degradation of water quality in the reservoir. Urbanization within the 1 km buffer zone from the reservoir shore increased at an annual rate of 18.02% during 2010-2020, contributing to the deterioration of water quality.

Applying SBM-GPA Model to Explore Urban Land Use Efficiency Considering Ecological Development in China

Xufeng Cui et al.

Summary: This study conducted a quantitative analysis of urban land use efficiency (ULUE) at the provincial scale in China from 2008 to 2017 using the SBM-GPA integration model. The analysis found possibilities for improvement in ULUE, strong correlation between ULUE and agglomeration characteristics, and identified three clusters of ULUE values (high, medium, low). The results can better support decision making in urban land use management.

Predictors of inequalities in land ownership among Nigerian households: Implications for sustainable development

Ismaila Rimi Abubakar

Summary: The ownership and use of land in Nigeria are facing challenges due to rapid urbanization and unsustainable resource consumptions. With a population expected to almost double by 2050, the government plans to establish cattle ranches to address farmer-herder clashes. Research shows that households owning agricultural land in Nigeria are more likely to be poor or middle class, rural dwellers, male-headed, residing in northern regions, and having lower education levels.
