Medicare Reimbursement Trends for Facility Performed Otolaryngology Procedures: 2000-2019

Summary: This study analyzed Medicare reimbursement data from 2000 to 2019 for the 20 most commonly billed otolaryngology procedures. The results showed an average decrease of 37.63% in reimbursement for these procedures during this period. Overall, the adjusted reimbursement rate for the combined procedures decreased by an average of 2.33% each year.

Summary: The study found that from 2000 to 2020, there was an average decrease of 21.2% in total reimbursement for all otologic procedures after adjusting for inflation. The average annual adjusted percent change was -1.3%, indicating a gradual decline in reimbursement over the study period. There was a significant difference between the adjusted and unadjusted percent change in reimbursement rate, showing a decline of 21% in adjusted and an increase of 20.4% in unadjusted rates during the study period (p < 0.001).
