Carbon fluxes in subtropical shallow lakes: contrasting regimes differ in CH4 emissions

Maite Colina et al.

Summary: The study compared CO2 and CH4 fluxes in three subtropical shallow lakes during summer months. Significant differences were found only in CH4 fluxes, with one lake showing CH4 uptake due to low availability of organic matter. In clear-vegetated and phytoplankton-turbid lakes, higher CH4 emissions were observed in littoral zones compared to pelagic zones. Submerged macrophytes dominance in some lakes may decrease carbon emissions to the atmosphere.

Shifting states, shifting services: Linking regime shifts to changes in ecosystem services of shallow lakes

Annette B. G. Janssen et al.

Summary: Shallow lakes can transition between stable states due to anthropogenic or natural factors, impacting the ecosystem services they provide. Different dominant groups of primary producers in these states determine the types of services supplied. The identified ecosystem services in shallow lakes are linked to various Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting the importance of considering trade-offs in conserving and restoring these ecosystems for the natural value they bring.

Lakes in the era of global change: moving beyond single-lake thinking in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services

Jani Heino et al.

Summary: Lakes are crucial for maintaining ecological balance and providing ecosystem services, but face challenges like invasion by non-native species and accumulation of harmful substances in the Anthropocene. Interdisciplinary research and integration of models are essential for the restoration and management of lake biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Metacommunity resilience against simulated gradients of wildfire: disturbance intensity and species dispersal ability determine landscape recover capacity

David Cunillera-Montcusi et al.

Summary: Disturbances, such as wildfires, are key drivers of biodiversity dynamics, impacting landscape structure and metacommunity networks. Communities show high resilience to disturbances, with recovery linked to dispersal abilities. However, increased disturbance regimes may threaten this resilience, with disturbance size and intensity playing crucial roles in determining community recovery rates.

The combined effects of macrophytes (Vallisneria denseserrulata) and a lanthanum-modified bentonite on water quality of shallow eutrophic lakes: A mesocosm study

Xiumei Zhang et al.

Summary: The combined treatment of submerged macrophytes and Phoslock (R) showed stronger improvement in water quality compared to individual measures, especially in reducing soluble reactive phosphorus. The treatment also led to transformation of phosphorus forms in different sediment layers, potentially accelerating lake restoration process.

The role of freshwater eutrophication in greenhouse gas emissions: A review

Yi Li et al.

Summary: Greenhouse gases (GHGs) from freshwater bodies are influenced by the eutrophic status, with both direct and indirect factors playing a role. The review emphasizes the existence of feedback loops between freshwater eutrophication and GHG emissions. Future research directions and mitigation measures are also discussed to provide insights into controlling GHG emissions.

Salinity shapes food webs of lakes in semiarid climate zones: a stable isotope approach

Nicolas Vidal et al.

Summary: The study found that in the semi-arid regions of northwest China, as the salinity of lakes increases, the number of taxa of all analysed communities decreases and the complexity of the entire food web decreases. In addition, trophic diversity and trophic position also decrease in most saline lakes.

Maite Colina et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the impact of fish on the exchange of carbon dioxide and methane in shallow aquatic systems. The research shows that fish have significant effects on the emission of CO2 and CH4 through trophic and non-trophic interactions, with benthic fish's bioturbation potentially being a key factor in total carbon emissions.

The American Pond Belt: an untold story of conservation challenges and opportunities

Timothy M. Swartz et al.

Summary: Millions of ponds have been constructed on farms in the eastern Great Plains of the US over the past century, serving as water sources for livestock, erosion control, and habitat for native species. However, the importance of these ponds in supporting biodiversity has been chronically underappreciated, highlighting the need for further development in conservation efforts. Efforts should focus on enhancing pondscapes to support a broad array of biodiversity at a landscape scale, with collaboration among scientists, agency personnel, policy makers, and landowners being crucial in the future conservation of pondscapes in the region.

Small artificial waterbodies are widespread and persistent emitters of methane and carbon dioxide

M. Peacock et al.

Summary: Inland waters serve an active role in the global carbon cycle by emitting large volumes of greenhouse gases. Research has highlighted the potential importance of small, artificial waterbodies like drainage ditches and constructed ponds as significant emission hotspots. Greenhouse gas emissions from these artificial waterbodies are positively related to nutrient status and are larger per unit area compared to natural systems, contributing to the global carbon cycle.

Phytoplankton and cyanobacteria abundances in mid-21st century lakes depend strongly on future land use and climate projections

Karan Kakouei et al.

Summary: Land use and climate change are expected to impact phytoplankton in lakes globally, but the effects vary significantly depending on the region and lake sensitivity. Urbanization is identified as a major driver of phytoplankton development in urban lakes, while climate plays a major role in lakes located in remote areas.

Decadal changes in size, salinity, waterbirds, and fish in lakes of the Konya Closed Basin, Turkey, associated with climate change and increasing water abstraction for agriculture

Gultekin Yilmaz et al.

Summary: The Konya Closed Basin in Turkey is experiencing a decline in water levels and increase in salinity in its lakes and wetlands due to factors like climate warming and intensified farming of water-intensive crops. This has led to the endangerment of waterbird species and loss of breeding species, as well as threats to endemic fish species. Models predict further reductions in water levels and potential deterioration or loss of lake ecosystems in the future.
