Summary: Partial nitritation-anammox (PNA) is a promising and energy-efficient process for sustainable nitrogen removal, but its wide applications are limited by long start-up period and instability in long-term operation. Quorum sensing (QS) in PNA process has been increasingly investigated as a way to manipulate microbial metabolism and overcome process limitations.

Sludge fermentation liquid addition attained advanced nitrogen removal in low C/N ratio municipal wastewater through short-cut nitrification-denitrification and partial anammox

Shengjie Qiu et al.

Summary: The study successfully improved the process of enhancing biological nitrogen removal of wastewater with low COD/N ratio by involving anammox process, achieving stable removal efficiency of TIN with the contribution of anammox bacteria in reducing external ammonia. The combination of anammox with SFL addition resulted in a stable enhanced nitrogen biological removal.

Enhanced simultaneous nitrification and denitrification via adding N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) in integrated floating fixed-film activated sludge process

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: The study introduced exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) to enhance simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) under low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio and low dissolved oxygen (DO) level. AHLs significantly increased polysaccharide contents of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), strengthening bacterial adhesion and improving biofilm structure and function. The efficient SND was attributed to the improved biofilm caused by AHLs and the enrichment of mixotrophic denitrifying genera participating in quorum sensing.

Realizing the role of N-acyl-homoserine lactone-mediated quorum sensing in nitrification and denitrification: A review

Na Wang et al.

Summary: Nitrification and denitrification are crucial processes in the nitrogen cycle, and the AHL-mediated QS system is considered a promising regulatory approach in nitrogen metabolism processes. Many microorganisms involved in nitrification and denitrification carry QS genes and may produce AHLs with different chain lengths. QS can affect nitrogen metabolism efficiency, granule aggregation, and biofilm formation in real-world applications.

Photocatalytic quorum quenching: A new antifouling and in-situ membrane cleaning strategy for an external membrane bioreactor coupled to UASB

Ch Tahir Mehmood et al.

Summary: This study introduced an effective UV photo-catalytic quorum quenching strategy to prevent biofilm formation on membrane surfaces, showing better efficacy in membrane fouling control compared to UV photolytic quorum quenching system. The photocatalytic quorum quenching system also achieved in-situ membrane cleaning and nearly complete disinfection of effluent, making it a promising strategy for preventing fouling in external membrane bioreactors for pilot- and/or full-scale applications.
