Failure of corrosion affected buried cast iron pipes subject to water hammer

Summary: This paper presents a time-dependent reliability method for predicting the risk of pipe failures under the adverse combination of excessive water hammer pressure and corrosion induced reduction of pipe strength. The study finds that the risk of pipe failures increases with the increase of mean occurrence rate of water hammer and that the sudden closure of pipe valves can have a devastating effect on the safety of pipeline networks. The time-dependent reliability method can accurately predict the risk of pipe failure under the combined stochastic effects of water hammer pressure and corrosion induced deterioration of the pipe, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of pipelines and potentially prolonging their service life.

Potential shift of bacterial community structure and corrosion-related bacteria in drinking water distribution pipeline driven by water source switching

Sulfate concentration and alkalinity are significantly important in controlling manganese release, while pH and disinfectant type also play a significant role. Further investigation of the impact of disinfectants on manganese release in DWDSs is necessary for better understanding and management of water quality.
