Spatial inference without a cognitive map: the role of higher-order path integration

Summary: The cognitive map and path integration are two strategies for agents to infer the most efficient route to a goal location, with path integration being considered more primitive and fixed. The debate on whether spatial navigation is ruled by associative learning or cognitive map mechanisms has been challenged due to experimental difficulties in neutralizing path integration. A new model, the Higher-Order Path Integration (HOPI) model, combines path integration with higher-order associative learning to successfully explain novel route taking.
