Health effects, sources, utilization and safety of tannins: a critical review

Kartik Sharma et al.

Summary: Tannins are phenolic compounds known for their complex and astringent properties, which can reduce nutrient absorption in the gut. Although they pose health risks like reduced digestibility and carcinogenic effects, recent studies have also shown their health benefits such as antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. While their food applications are limited due to astringency, tannins have wide uses in pharmaceutical industries.

By-Products of Agri-Food Industry as Tannin-Rich Sources: A Review of Tannins' Biological Activities and Their Potential for Valorization

Maria Fraga-Corral et al.

Summary: In recent decades, consumers have been increasingly substituting synthetic ingredients in the food industry with natural products sourced from plants, animals, or microorganisms. A circular economy is seen as the most efficient production system for reducing and reutilizing waste. Current agriculture generates significant amounts of organic agricultural waste, potentially valuable for bioactive molecules like tannins, which have diverse biological activities and potential applications in the food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries.

Recent Developments in Lignin- and Tannin-Based Non-Isocyanate Polyurethane Resins for Wood Adhesives-A Review

Manggar Arum Aristri et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes the potential of using renewable resources like lignin and tannin for preparing non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) wood adhesives. Research has shown that NIPUs based on lignin and tannin offer advantages such as improved strength, lower curing temperatures, shorter pressing times, and being isocyanate-free.

Properties of Eco-Friendly Particleboards Bonded with Lignosulfonate-Urea-Formaldehyde Adhesives and pMDI as a Crosslinker

Pavlo Bekhta et al.

Summary: The study found that LS can effectively adjust the pH of LS-UF formulations, and boards bonded with LS-UF adhesive showed similar properties to those bonded with UF adhesive. Substituting UF with LS decreased water absorption and thickness swelling of boards, with NaLS-UF boards having lower formaldehyde content. Increasing pMDI content significantly improved mechanical properties of boards bonded with LS adhesives, while boards bonded with pure UF adhesive exhibited better mechanical properties.

Thermophysical Properties of Larch Bark Composite Panels

Lubos Kristak et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of using 100% larch bark as a raw material for composite boards on the thermophysical properties of the material. It was found that thermal conductivity was significantly influenced by bulk density, and increased with larger particle sizes. The decrease in thermal diffusivity was mainly attributed to larger particle sizes, especially in the parallel orientation of bark particles. Specific heat capacity, however, was not significantly dependent on density, particle size, glue amount, and particle orientation.
