Rapid assessment of heavy metal-induced toxicity in water using micro-algal bioassay based on photosynthetic oxygen evolution

Fida Hussain et al.

Summary: This study described a simple and rapid toxicity assessment procedure for heavy metals using photosynthetic oxygen evolution as an endpoint measurement. Results showed that hexavalent chromium is less sensitive under certain conditions, with cyanide exhibiting the strongest toxicity among the tested heavy metals.

Kinetics Growth and Recovery of Valuable Nutrients from Selangor Peat Swamp and Pristine Forest Soils Using Different Extraction Methods as Potential Microalgae Growth Enhancers

Nor Suhaila Yaacob et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of virgin soils from Peninsular Malaysia as growth enhancers for microalgae, finding that autoclave extraction method at 121 degrees C twice is the most effective in promoting growth. This method results in higher concentrations of total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, and dissolved organic carbon in the soil extracts, ultimately reducing the cost and need for synthetic medium in microalgae cultivation. The high recovery rate of nutrients from the soil extracts presents a significant potential as a growth promoter for microalgae.
