Ecology drives patterns of spectral transmission in the ocular lenses of frogs and salamanders

Kate N. Thomas et al.

Summary: The spectral characteristics of vertebrate ocular lenses shape visual capabilities, with both diurnal activity and scansorial habits influencing lens transmission in amphibians. Shortwave light, including UV, plays an important role in amphibian behavior and ecology, even in the absence of UV-sensitive visual pigments.

Evolution, inactivation and loss of short wavelength-sensitive opsin genes during the diversification of Neotropical cichlids

Frances E. Hauser et al.

Summary: Natural variation in sensory genes, particularly opsins, in Neotropical cichlid fishes was influenced by ecological factors such as light environment, leading to relaxation of selective constraint and episodic positive selection. This coincided with extensive ecological divergence in Neotropical cichlids, suggesting that variable light environments played a key role in shaping SWS opsin diversity during their radiation. Early losses of UV sensitivity may have constrained the evolutionary trajectory of Neotropical cichlid vision under light-limited conditions in South America.
