Altitude-mediated soil properties, not geography or climatic distance, explain the distribution of a tropical endemic herb

Jacob K. Moutouama et al.

Summary: This study examined the factors influencing the density of an endemic perennial herb in West Africa and found that distance from geographic and climatic niche centers did not have a significant effect on plant density. Altitudinal gradient and soil nitrogen and potassium were identified as important factors influencing plant density.

Traits as determinants of species abundance in a grassland community

Ales Lisner et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a strong relationship between intraspecific trait variability and local species performance within communities, with plant height and specific leaf area explaining the biggest proportion of variation in species abundance. The impact of intraspecific trait variability on species abundance patterns is more significant compared to environmental conditions and trait differences from community-weighted mean values.

Functional Traits Are Good Predictors of Tree Species Abundance Across 101 Subtropical Forest Species in China

Ronghua Li et al.

Summary: The study in a subtropical forest in southern China found that leaf phosphorus content, specific leaf area, maximum CO2 assimilation rate, maximum stomata conductance, and stem hydraulic conductivity were significantly and negatively associated with species abundance, while the ratio of leaf nitrogen content to leaf phosphorus content (N:P) and wood density were significantly positively correlated with species abundance.
