Characterization of a Novel Mitovirus of the Sand Fly Lutzomyia longipalpis Using Genomic and Virus-Host Interaction Signatures

Paula Fonseca et al.

Summary: Hematophagous insects, such as sand flies, are major reservoirs of infectious agents due to their close contact with vertebrate hosts. A novel mitovirus, Lul-MV-1, was identified in Lutzomyia longipalpis, suggesting sand flies may serve as hosts for this virus. Molecular analysis showed similarities between Lul-MV-1 and mitochondrial DNA of invertebrate hosts, and the virus-derived small RNA profile indicated activation of the siRNA pathway, further supporting sand flies as potential hosts for this virus.
