The use of whole blood in traumatic bleeding: a systematic review

Mario Cruciani et al.

Summary: Hemostatic resuscitation using whole blood (WB) has been proposed as an alternative for traumatic major bleeding when access to high quantities of blood components is limited. A systematic review of literature comparing WB transfusions to blood component (COMP) transfusions in trauma-associated massive bleeding was conducted, with limited evidence showing no significant differences in mortality rates between the two groups. Further well-designed research is needed to draw definitive conclusions on the efficacy and safety of WB transfusion compared to COMP transfusion.
