Contribution of tailpipe and non-tailpipe traffic sources to quasi-ultrafine, fine and coarse particulate matter in southern California

Rima Habre et al.

Summary: Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is associated with adverse health effects, with tailpipe and non-tailpipe sources making different contributions to particulate matter (PM) in various size fractions. Non-tailpipe abrasive vehicular emissions (AVE) contribute significantly to ultrafine particulate matter in some southern California communities. This has implications for exposure and policy, as AVE have high metal content and can reach the alveolar region of the lungs and other organs.

Quantification of the impact of port activities on PM10 levels at the port-city boundary of a mediterranean city

A. Clemente et al.

Summary: The study revealed that reducing fugitive emissions caused by bulk material handling at the port would be an effective way to decrease PM10 levels, while other measures could help mitigate anthropogenic exceedances of the daily PM10 limit.

Changes in source contributions to particle number concentrations after the COVID-19 outbreak: Insights from a dispersion normalized PMF

Qili Dai et al.

Summary: The study used dispersion normalized PMF model to analyze particle number concentration dataset in Tianjin, China, revealing the variation pattern of PM2.5 sources. During the COVID-19 lockdown, particle number concentrations of traffic nucleation and traffic emissions decreased, while photonucleation produced more particles.

Chromium and Zinc Speciation in Airborne Particulate Matter Collected in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, by X-Ray Absorption Near-edge Structure Spectroscopy

Gerelmaa Gunchin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical speciation of atmospheric particulate matter samples collected in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. By using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, the study found trivalent chromium sulfate and chromium oxide compounds as the major chemical forms of chromium, and identified various zinc compounds in different size fractions of PM samples. The results suggest that the chromium and zinc species in atmospheric aerosols may originate from local anthropogenic sources.
