Compartmental immunophenotyping in COVID-19 ARDS: A case series

Andreas Ronit et al.

Summary: In critically ill patients with COVID-19 ARDS, there is a distinct immunological profile in the lungs, characterized by a dominance of immature neutrophils, lymphopenia of CD4 and CD8 T cells, and higher fractions of regulatory T cells and TH17 cells. The lung exhibits a heavily hyperinflammatory environment with upregulation of activation markers on CD4 and CD8 T cells and macrophages, along with high levels of various cytokines such as IL-1RA, IL-6, IL-8, IP-10, and MCP-1.

Hypoalbuminemia in COVID-19: assessing the hypothesis for underlying pulmonary capillary leakage

M. A. Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that hypoalbuminaemia could serve as a marker of severity in patients with COVID-19, indicating epithelial-endothelial damage. Additionally, there are indications that pulmonary capillary leak syndrome plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19.

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells for COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome: A double-blind, phase 1/2a, randomized controlled trial

Giacomo Lanzoni et al.

Summary: The study confirmed safety of UC-MSC infusions in patients with COVID-19 ARDS. By reducing inflammatory cytokines, significant improvement was observed in UC-MSC-treated patients on day 6. The treatment markedly increased patient survival rate, SAE-free survival, and time to recovery.

Immunophenotypic characterization and therapeutics effects of human bone marrow- and umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells in an experimental model of sepsis

Amir K. Varkouhi et al.

Summary: Comparative study on the therapeutic effects of bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) and umbilical cord-derived MSCs (UC-MSCs) in a mouse model of polymicrobial sepsis showed significant differences in gene expression profile, surface markers, and therapeutic potency between the two MSC types. BM-MSCs improved survival with enhanced bacterial clearance and improved inflammatory profile post CLP surgery, while UC-MSCs did not enhance survival or bacterial clearance despite some improvement in the inflammatory profile of septic animals.

Bridging animal and clinical research during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: A new-old challenge

Martin S. Winkler et al.

Summary: Animal models have played a crucial role in medical research, especially in studying the novel coronavirus. Apart from clinical studies, these models have provided significant support for COVID-19 drug and vaccine development. During pandemics, optimizing the synergy between preclinical and clinical domains is essential for efficient resource utilization.
