Mesenchymal Bmp3b expression maintains skeletal muscle integrity and decreases in age-related sarcopenia

Akiyoshi Uezumi et al.

Summary: Mesenchymal progenitors play a crucial role in muscle maintenance, and their depletion leads to phenotypes similar to sarcopenia. The gene Bmp3b is specifically expressed in mesenchymal progenitors and its importance in maintaining muscle mass and muscle-nerve interaction has been demonstrated. Administration of recombinant BMP3B in aged mice can reverse sarcopenic phenotypes.

Inhibition of prostaglandin-degrading enzyme 15-PGDH rejuvenates aged muscle mass and strength

A. R. Palla et al.

Summary: The study found that muscle atrophy in aged mice is mainly due to the increase of 15-PGDH leading to the decrease in PGE(2) signaling, while inhibition of 15-PGDH can increase the quality, strength, and exercise performance of aged muscle.

Single-cell RNA sequencing and lipidomics reveal cell and lipid dynamics of fat infiltration in skeletal muscle

Ziye Xu et al.

Summary: This study created a skeletal muscle model with high intramuscular fat (IMAT) infiltration through glycerol injection and identified the crucial role of myeloid-derived cells and fibro/adipogenic progenitors in fat infiltration. Lipidomic and RNA sequencing analysis revealed alterations in lipid compositions and gene expression levels in fat-infiltrated muscles. Short-term cold exposure was found to regulate fatty acid composition by affecting lipid metabolism pathways in fat-infiltrated muscles.

Myogenic Differentiation of Stem Cells for Skeletal Muscle Regeneration

Dengjie Yu et al.

Summary: Stem cells are crucial for regenerative medicine, particularly in skeletal muscle regeneration, as they have the potential to repair damaged muscle tissues and alleviate patient suffering. This review discusses the use of scaffolds and stem cells in skeletal muscle regeneration and proposes ideas for future development.
