Assessing multifunctionality of agricultural soils: Reducing the biodiversity trade-off

Carmen Vazquez et al.

Summary: The study found that some farms have a high level of soil function supply, but there is a balance issue between biodiversity and primary productivity and nutrient cycling. When there is more organic input and less mineral fertilizer use, biodiversity scores higher, while maintaining moderate levels of primary productivity and nutrient cycling. Additionally, comparing model predictions with proxies for soil functions further proves the effectiveness of the models.

Summary: In recent years, studies on ecosystem multifunctionality have increased, but there is still a lack of consistency in determining and measuring appropriate functions. Views on ecosystem functions vary depending on the field of ecology.

Global terrestrial water storage and drought severity under climate change

Yadu Pokhrel et al.

Summary: Using ensemble hydrological simulations, it is found that climate change could reduce TWS in many regions, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. The decline in TWS translates to an increase in future droughts, highlighting the need for climate change mitigation and improved water resource management and adaptation. By the late twenty-first century, the global land area and population in extreme-to-exceptional TWS drought could more than double.

An unusually diverse genus of Collembola in the Cape Floristic Region characterised by substantial desiccation tolerance

W. P. Amy Liu et al.

Summary: Trait-environment interactions have contributed to the diversity of the invertebrate fauna in the Cape Floristic Region, with the Collembola genus Seira showing greater desiccation tolerance in the warm, dry fynbos shrubland habitats compared to moister environments. This suggests that pronounced desiccation and thermal tolerance have enabled the diversity of Seira species to exploit the hot and dry habitats in the CFR.

Soil microarthropods respond differently to simulated drought in organic and conventional farming systems

Svenja Meyer et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of simulated drought on soil microarthropods in winter wheat fields in Switzerland, finding that organic farming systems can mitigate the negative impacts of drought on soil microarthropods, potentially due to higher soil carbon content, higher soil moisture, and improved soil structure. This highlights the promising potential of organic farming in combating the consequences of future droughts on soil biodiversity and warrants further exploration across larger climatic and spatial scales.

Soil multifunctionality: Synergies and trade-offs acrossEuropeanclimatic zones and land uses

Marie J. Zwetsloot et al.

Summary: Societal demands for food security and environmental sustainability have prompted the study of synergies and trade-offs between soil functions across Europe. The research found that managing and monitoring soil multifunctionality is feasible, but there are constraints and trade-offs between soil functions. Nutrient cycling, biodiversity, and climate regulation are less frequently delivered at high capacity compared to primary productivity and water regulation. Synergies and trade-offs between soil functions vary by climatic zone and land-use type.

Crop cover is more important than rotational diversity for soil multifunctionality and cereal yields in European cropping systems

Gina Garland et al.

Summary: The study shows that in conventionally managed European fields, the proportion of time with crop cover during the past ten-year rotation has a greater impact than crop diversity on soil microbial diversity, soil multifunctionality, and crop yield.
