Cytochrome P450 CYP81A10v7 in Lolium rigidum confers metabolic resistance to herbicides across at least five modes of action

Heping Han et al.

Summary: The rapid evolution of multiple herbicide resistance in global weed species, especially through metabolic resistance, poses a major threat to herbicide sustainability and global food production. A study found that a P450 gene in Lolium rigidum confers resistance to at least five modes of action across seven herbicide chemistries, indicating a wide cross-resistance profile to many dissimilar herbicides in transgenic plants.

Population structure and evolution of resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibitors in Amaranthus tuberculatus in Italy

Andrea Milani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the population structure and ALS haplotypes of Italian Amaranthus tuberculatus populations resistant to herbicides. The research revealed that resistance to ALS inhibitors arose independently at least three times, with one population already resistant when introduced in Italy. A single haplotype carrying the Trp574Leu mutation was shared among six populations, likely due to broad seed dispersal. Additionally, one population likely evolved resistance to non-target site ALS inhibitors.

Target-Site and Non-target-Site Resistance Mechanisms Confer Multiple and Cross- Resistance to ALS and ACCase Inhibiting Herbicides in Lolium rigidum From Spain

Joel Torra et al.

Summary: The weed Lolium rigidum in Spain shows resistance to ALS and ACCase inhibiting herbicides, as well as reduced sensitivity to other chemistries. Resistance to ACCase inhibitors is linked to specific point mutations in the enzyme, while non-target-site resistance may also play a role. The study highlights the urgent need to monitor and prevent further evolution of herbicide resistance in L. rigidum in Mediterranean areas.
