Is Keratoconus an Inflammatory Disease? The Implication of Inflammatory Pathways

I-Ping Loh et al.

Summary: This study utilized cytokine antibody arrays to analyze the inflammatory aspects of keratoconus. The results showed that pathways for wound healing, neuroprotection, angiogenesis, and inflammation were activated in keratoconic samples, with multiple cytokines showing significant elevation.

Evaluation of inflammatory biomarkers in patients with keratoconus

Refik Oltulu et al.

Summary: In patients with keratoconus, the monocyte-to-HDL-cholesterol ratio (MHR) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were significantly higher, while the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) was lower. Among these markers, MHR was found to be the most reliable parameter.

Tear Mediators NGF along with IL-13 Predict Keratoconus Progression

Mariann Fodor et al.

Summary: Through tear sample analysis, the combination of IL-13 and NGF can predict keratoconus progression with high specificity and sensitivity. The findings suggest that tear levels of NGF and IL-13 may play an important role in predicting the progression of keratoconus.

Effect of mechanical injury and IL-1β on the expression of LOXs and MMP-1, 2, 3 in PCL fibroblasts after co-culture with synoviocytes

Chunming Xu et al.

Summary: The crosstalk between PCLfs and SCs affected the homeostatic balance of ECM and wound healing of PCL. IL-1 beta played a critical role in modulating the expression of LOXs and MMPs in PCLfs. Co-culture of PCLfs and SCs amplified the response to IL-1 beta, suppressing LOXs and stimulating MMPs expressions.

Interleukin-1 beta Induced Matrix Metalloproteinase Expression in Human Periodontal Ligament-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells under In Vitro Simulated Static Orthodontic Forces

Christian Behm et al.

Summary: The periodontal ligament responds to orthodontic forces by ECM remodeling, influenced by IL-1 beta and aseptic inflammation. IL-1 beta affects the expression of MMPs and TIMPs in hPDL-MSCs under low-magnitude orthodontic forces. FBS suppresses IL-1 beta-induced expression of MMPs and TIMPs, suggesting a complex interplay in the response of hPDL-MSCs to static orthodontic strains.
