Graphene Liquid Cell Electron Microscopy: Progress, Applications, and Perspectives

Jungjae Park et al.

Summary: GLC-EM is a powerful tool for direct visualization of wet biological samples and the microstructural dynamics of nanomaterials in liquids. By using graphene sheets as a viewing window and liquid container, GLC enables atomic-scale observation while maintaining intact liquids. Diverse scientific results have been reported in the material, colloidal, environmental, and life science fields using GLC-EM.

Revealing the Role of Fluoride-Rich Battery Electrode Interphases by Operando Transmission Electron Microscopy

Chen Gong et al.

Summary: The study investigates the nanoscale structural evolution of lithium electrodeposition and dissolution at the electrode surface across fluoride-poor and fluoride-rich interphases, showing that a fluoride-rich SEI can suppress lithium detachment and isolation, reduce dead Li formation, and prevent electrolyte decomposition, ultimately improving lithium cycling efficiency.

STEM Characterization of Dislocation Loops in Irradiated FCC Alloys

Pengyuan Xiu et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic methodology for imaging and analyzing dislocation loops in irradiated FCC alloys using STEM was demonstrated. The preferred choice of on-zone [001] STEM imaging was identified based on its accuracy and effectiveness compared to other techniques, and the effect of STEM collection angle on contrast formation of dislocation loops was investigated. The developed STEM-based technique can easily identify different types of dislocation loops in irradiated FCC-based materials and serves as a quick and convenient tool for such analyses.

Fast versus conventional HAADF-STEM tomography of nanoparticles: advantages and challenges

Hans Vanrompay et al.

Summary: HAADF-STEM tomography is a widely used experimental technique for analyzing nanometer-scale structures of various materials in three dimensions, especially useful for studying crystalline nanoparticles. Various acquisition strategies have been proposed to accelerate tomographic acquisition and reduce the required electron dose, but experimental evaluation of these techniques is lacking.

Determining the three-dimensional atomic structure of an amorphous solid

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed an atomic electron tomography reconstruction method to experimentally determine the 3D atomic positions of an amorphous solid, successfully characterizing the short- and medium-range order of the 3D atomic arrangement. The research identified four types of crystal-like medium-range order and provided direct experimental evidence to support the efficient cluster packing model for metallic glasses.

Single-atom level determination of 3-dimensional surface atomic structure via neural network-assisted atomic electron tomography

Juhyeok Lee et al.

Summary: Using deep learning and atomic electron tomography techniques, the surface atomic structure of nanoparticles can be measured with 15pm precision. Different crystal facets lead to varying surface strain distributions, and the ability to characterize surfaces at the single-atom level not only enhances our understanding of nanomaterial properties, but also opens up new possibilities for fine-tuning performance.

A correlation between grain boundary character and deformation twin nucleation mechanism in coarse-grained high-Mn austenitic steel

Chang-Yu Hung et al.

Summary: This study experimentally demonstrates the critical role of grain boundary characters in understanding the mechanism of deformation twin nucleation. Specifically, local stresses at particular boundaries, such as Sigma 3{111}, can trigger deformation twin nucleation. This finding highlights the practical importance of considering grain boundary characters in understanding material mechanical properties beyond established factors such as stacking fault energy and grain size.
