Water-soluble ZnSe/ZnS:Mn/ZnS quantum dots convert UV to visible light for improved Si solar cell efficiency

Summary: Water-soluble ZnSe/ZnS:Mn/ZnS core/shell/shell quantum dots capable of converting UV into visible light were synthesized via a hydrothermal method, achieving a photoluminescence quantum yield of 84%. By applying the wavelength-conversion glass containing the QDs to Si solar cells, the spectral sensitivity at wavelengths shorter than 400 nm was significantly improved, resulting in a 7.4% increase in conversion efficiency compared to cells without the coating.
