Impact of complementary and alternative medicines on antiepileptic medication adherence among epilepsy patients

Muhammad Junaid Farrukh et al.

Summary: The study found a high prevalence of CAM usage (58%) among epilepsy patients, with vitamins/minerals, ginseng, antioxidants, and acupuncture being the most commonly used. A significant proportion of patients had low knowledge (59%) but a positive attitude (54%) towards CAM, with reasons for use being lower cost, better availability, and inadequate seizure control by AEDs. The study also identified a high rate of non-adherence to AED therapy (68%) among patients, with a significant association between non-adherence and CAM usage.
