Genomic analysis of diet composition finds novel loci and associations with health and lifestyle

S. Fleur W. Meddens et al.

Summary: The study identified genetic correlations between relative protein intake and obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease; negative genetic correlations between relative carbohydrate and sugar intake and waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and neighborhood deprivation; and positive genetic correlations between these and physical activity. Fat intake showed no consistent genetic correlations with poor health, but was negatively correlated with educational attainment. No evidence of negative health consequences was found associated with relative carbohydrate, sugar, or fat intake, while relative protein intake was suggested to play a role in metabolic dysfunction.

Summary: The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery had a short-term effect on postprandial FGF21 response, but no sustained changes were observed 18 months post-surgery, possibly due to small sample size and large inter-individual variations.
