A switch-on molecular biosensor for detection of caspase-3 and imaging of apoptosis of cells

Rui Gong et al.

Summary: This study introduces a genetically encoded switch-on mNeonGreen2-based biosensor for detecting caspase-3 activity. The biosensor demonstrated shortened response time, higher sensitivity, and prolonged functional shelf life in detecting caspase-3 compared to existing counterparts. Additionally, the biosensor was used to evaluate the effect of various drugs on inducing apoptosis in HeLa and MCF-7 tumor cells and inhibiting Zika virus invasion.

Going with the grain: Fiber, cognition, and the microbiota-gut-brain-axis

Kirsten Berding et al.

Summary: Healthy dietary intake is crucial for mental health and cognitive function, with individual nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols playing key roles. While the impact of dietary fiber on gastrointestinal and metabolic health is well-established, its influence on cognitive function is still underexplored. The microbiota-gut-brain axis has emerged as a key conduit for the effects of nutrition on the brain, especially fibers that are acted on by specific bacteria to produce health-promoting metabolites.

The relationship between gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids and type 2 diabetes mellitus: the possible role of dietary fibre

Dominic Salamone et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota and its metabolites can influence various physiological mechanisms related to human health. Dietary fiber may play a key role in modulating the risk of metabolic diseases by affecting gut microbiota activity and SCFA production. Studies have explored the relationship between gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids, and glucose metabolism, discussing the potential mechanisms behind this association.

Participation of Short-Chain Fatty Acids and Their Receptors in Gut Inflammation and Colon Cancer

Maria Daniella Carretta et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber play a critical role in maintaining intestinal health, have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects, and signal through various receptors. A fiber-rich diet is associated with reduced risk of colon cancer and clinical benefits for patients with IBD.

Gut microbiome variation modulates the effects of dietary fiber on host metabolism

Sofia M. Murga-Garrido et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a causal link between interindividual variation in gut microbiome and differential effects of dietary fiber on host metabolic phenotypes, suggesting that a one-fits-all fiber supplementation approach to promote health is unlikely to elicit consistent effects across individuals. The findings underscore the importance of microbe-diet interactions on host metabolism and suggest that gut microbes modulate dietary fiber efficacy.
