High prevalence and clinical impact of dynapenia and sarcopenia in Japanese patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes: Findings from the Impact of Diabetes Mellitus on Dynapenia study

Hiroyasu Mori et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia and dynapenia were more prevalent in patients with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes than in individuals without diabetes, leading to impaired quality of life and increased risk of incidental falls. Patients with sarcopenia and dynapenia were older, thinner, and more likely to have diabetic neuropathy, indicating the importance of addressing muscle weakness in diabetic patients for improved outcomes.

A Narrative Review on Sarcopenia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Prevalence and Associated Factors

Anna Izzo et al.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major health burden for the elderly, affecting approximately 25% of those over 65 years old. Sarcopenia, characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, has been identified as a new complication in elderly individuals with T2DM. It is important for researchers and clinicians to understand the risk factors and associations of sarcopenia in T2DM patients in order to provide appropriate therapeutic interventions.

Association between Geriatric Nutrition Risk Index and The Presence of Sarcopenia in People with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Cross-Sectional Study

Fuyuko Takahashi et al.

Summary: This study revealed an association between low Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and the prevalence of sarcopenia in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Low GNRI was found to be related to a higher proportion of sarcopenia, showcasing a significant correlation between nutritional risk and muscle loss in this population.

Nutrition counseling is associated with less sarcopenia in diabetes: A cross-sectional and retrospective cohort study

Lin-Chien Chan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia in people with DM and found that increased nutrition counseling was associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. The research also indicated a higher prevalence of sarcopenia among participants over the age of 65.

A low serum IGF-1 is correlated with sarcopenia in subjects with type 1 diabetes mellitus: Findings from a post-hoc analysis of the iDIAMOND study

Sonyun Hata et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that serum IGF-1 levels were significantly lower in subjects with type 1 diabetes mellitus compared to those without diabetes. The study revealed a strong correlation between low serum IGF-1 levels and sarcopenia and low skeletal muscle mass in subjects with type 1 diabetes, independent of grip strength or gait speed.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus was 18%, with older age, male gender, chronic hyperglycemia, and osteoporosis being significant risk factors for sarcopenia. Lower BMI and metformin administrations were associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia.
