Food security and food quality among vanilla farmers in Madagascar: the role of contract farming and livestock keeping

Jessica Noromalala Andriamparany et al.

Summary: The SAVA region of Madagascar is a major producer of vanilla, and while the region's socio-economic situation has improved due to high vanilla prices, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the nutritional status of local vanilla farmers. A longitudinal food survey of 140 households revealed high levels of food insecurity and micronutrient deficiency, but acceptable protein intake. Factors influencing food security included household size and income sources, with rice sales income playing a significant role. Further efforts are needed to improve household diet quality and enhance farmers' resilience to food insecurity in the region.

Adherence to Food-Based Dietary Guidelines: A Systemic Review of High-Income and Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Ana Carolina B. Leme et al.

Summary: Research comparing adherence to food-based dietary guidelines between high-income (HIC) and low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC) is lacking. Findings show that almost 40% of populations in both HIC and LMIC do not adhere to their national FBDGs. Fruit and vegetable consumption was highest, but consumption of discretionary foods varied between HIC and LMIC. Grains and dairy were consumed below recommendations in both HIC and LMIC, while consumption of animal proteins, particularly red meat, exceeded recommendations. Individuals from both HIC and LMIC may not be meeting at least one dietary recommendation from their country's guidelines. Future health policies, behavioral-change strategies, and dietary guidelines should take these findings into consideration.

Low Daily Intake of Fruits and Vegetables in Rural and Urban Bangladesh: Influence of Socioeconomic and Demographic Factors, Social Food Beliefs and Behavioural Practices

Sadia Mustafa et al.

Summary: Bangladesh is facing a large burden of non-communicable diseases, with a majority of the population consuming less than the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. Factors such as being a housewife, lower income, lower education, and younger age are associated with lower fruit and vegetable intake. Higher education plays a role in promoting positive food beliefs and practices, while living in rural communities presents a significant constraint.

Short-Term Implications of Climate Shocks on Wheat-Based Nutrient Flows: A Global Nutrition at Risk Analysis through a Stochastic CGE Model

Tetsuji Tanaka et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the extent to which wheat-based nutrient supplies are exposed to the risks of realistic productivity and trade shocks, finding that households in certain countries may experience losses in nutrient consumption. Additionally, export restrictions implemented by certain countries could increase the probability of nutrient shocks for many nations.
