Prevalence of sarcopenic obesity and sarcopenic overweight in the general population: The lifelines cohort study

Carlijn A. Wagenaar et al.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence and determinants of sarcopenic obesity (SO) and sarcopenia in overweight (SOW) in a general population, finding higher prevalence of SOW and SO in females across all age groups, with age being a significant determinant of both conditions. Subjects over 70 years old accounted for 82.5% and 80.4% of SO and SOW patients, respectively.

Body composition assessment using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in a wide cohort of patients affected with mild to severe obesity

Amelia Brunani et al.

Summary: This study described the Resistance and Reactance values obtained by BIA in a cohort of Italian patients with mild to severe obesity, and found a significant association between these values and BMI, sex, and age. The results provide a basis for developing new equations adapted for patients suffering from obesity.

Feasibility of a Geriatric Assessment to Detect and Quantify Sarcopenia and Physical Functioning in German Nursing Home Residents-A Pilot Study

Daniel Haigis et al.

Summary: The feasibility of sarcopenia screening in German nursing homes was satisfactory, but there were difficulties in assessing the physical functioning of participants, and inconsistencies in individual assessments affected the reliability of the results. Recording the prevalence of sarcopenia in German nursing homes should be a goal for further research.

BaSAlt-A mixed-methods study protocol on setting-based physical activity promotion and counseling in nursing homes

A. Thiel et al.

Summary: The BaSAlt study aims to investigate factors and barriers for promoting physical activity in nursing homes, involving a multi-level analysis and counseling module to assess the implementation of PA promotion strategies. This study will provide valuable insights for governmental authorities, care professionals, and academics on reaching inactive, multimorbid, and dementia prevalent elderly residents in nursing homes.
