Neutrophil extracellular traps promote fibrous vascular occlusions in chronic thrombosis

Smriti Sharma et al.

Summary: The study reveals the significant role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in chronic thrombosis, with targeting these NETs potentially serving as a new therapeutic concept to treat thrombosis and prevent its sequelae.

Celecoxib-Loaded Electrospun Fibrous Antiadhesion Membranes Reduce COX-2/PGE2 Induced Inflammation and Epidural Fibrosis in a Rat Failed Back Surgery Syndrome Model

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: A new electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) fibrous membrane loaded with Celecoxib (CEL) was developed to prevent fibrosis and inflammation associated with failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) in a rat model. The membrane demonstrated significant reduction in fibroblast proliferation and epidural fibrosis, as well as decreased expression of COX-2 and PGE(2). This suggests that the CEL-loaded PCL membrane may be a promising new approach for treating FBSS.

The Neutrophil

Garth Lawrence Burn et al.

Summary: Neutrophils are immune cells with potent antimicrobial properties, capable of efficiently killing microorganisms both intracellularly and extracellularly. In addition to fighting infections, they can use their toxic machinery in other contexts such as cancer. However, inappropriate or dysregulated activation of neutrophils can lead to host damage and contribute to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Induce the Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition: Implications in Post-COVID-19 Fibrosis

Laura Pandolfi et al.

Summary: This study found that NETs play a role in inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition of lung epithelial cells after severe SARS-CoV2 infection. Analysis of samples from severe COVID-19 patients showed high concentrations of NETs correlated with neutrophil count, indicating their potential involvement in disease progression. In vitro models revealed that induction of NETosis by SARS-CoV2 and secretion of AM factors are necessary to trigger a complete EMT expression pattern, shedding light on a possible mechanism for lung fibrosis post-SARS-CoV2 infection.

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) in Cancer Invasion, Evasion and Metastasis

Urszula Demkow

Summary: This review focuses on the pro-tumorigenic action of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which are found in various human and animal tumors. NETs play a crucial role in tumor development by awakening dormant cancer cells, regulating the tumor microenvironment, and enhancing tumor aggressiveness. Understanding the crosstalk between cancer and NETs can lead to novel therapeutic interventions to block cancer evasion mechanisms and prevent metastatic spread.
