Reconstructing atmospheric circulation and sea-ice extent in the West Antarctic over the past 200 years using data assimilation

Quentin Dalaiden et al.

Summary: By reconstructing the climate variability of the past two centuries in the West Antarctic sector, this study reveals long-term trends, such as the reduction of sea ice in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen Sea sector starting around 1850 and the strengthening and eastward shift of the Amundsen Sea Low pressure after 1950. The study also shows that the sea-ice variations in the Ross Sea sector are strongly related to the Amundsen Sea Low pressure variability over the past two centuries, including recent trends, while the link between ASL and sea-ice in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen Sea sector changes with time, becoming stronger in recent decades.

Variability of Antarctic sea ice extent over the past 200 years

Jiao Yang et al.

Summary: The study found different trends in the annualresolved northernmost latitude of sea ice edge for different sectors of the Antarctic, with trends in the Weddell Sea, Bellingshausen Sea, and the Indian and western Pacific Ocean regions largely dominated by the changes in the Southern Annular Mode, while trends in the Amundsen Sea and Ross Sea are mainly influenced by the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation.

Extratropical Southern Hemisphere Synchronous Pressure Variability in the Early Twentieth Century

Ryan L. Fogt et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the spatial pattern of pressure variability across the Southern Hemisphere in the early twentieth century, revealing synchronous but opposite-signed pressure relationships between Antarctica and the midlatitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in the summer and autumn. In addition to connections with the southern annular mode, regional and shorter duration pressure trends are found to be associated with influences from tropical variability and potentially the zonal wavenumber 3 pattern.
