Evaluation of the Potential of Agricultural Waste Recovery: Energy Densification as a Factor for Residual Biomass Logistics Optimization

Leonel J. R. Nunes et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of using residual forms of biomass from the agri-food industry as an alternative energy source, especially in replacing fossil fuels. The experimental analysis of by-products shows that these biomass residues have potential advantages in energy recovery, particularly in the replacement of fossil fuels.

Fibre and Seed Productivity of Industrial Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) Varieties under Mediterranean Conditions

Eleni Tsaliki et al.

Summary: The 3-year field experiment in northern Greece under Mediterranean conditions showed that the hemp variety Bialobrzeskie exhibited high productivity for both fibres and seeds. Hemp fibre yield was strongly positively correlated with total biomass and stem biomass yield, while it was inversely correlated with fibre strength. Seed yield showed no correlation with hemp plant density, height, total biomass, or stem biomass yield.

Physico-Mechanical Properties of Particleboards Produced from Macadamia Nutshell and Gum Arabic

Derrick Mirindi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard made from macadamia nutshells mixed with gum Arabic, showing that particleboards with 50% gum Arabic and 50% macadamia nutshells performed well in terms of water absorption, thickness swelling, and strength. These particleboards met the standard for general-purpose boards, except for water absorption and thickness swelling characteristics.

Effect of Hemp Fiber Surface Treatment on the Moisture/Water Resistance and Reaction to Fire of Reinforced PLA Composites

Percy Festus Alao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of surface pretreatment and modification on hemp fiber reinforced PLA composites at different fiber loading contents. Results showed that fiber surface treatment improved fiber individualization and homogeneity, while increasing fiber loading content led to higher sensitivity to moisture/water and improved fire protection. Additionally, the study found that the new Oswin's model predicted the composite adsorption isotherm well, with alkali and silane treated hemp fiber composites having the lowest overall adsorption and highest ignition temperature.

Heat Transfer in Straw-Based Thermal Insulating Materials

Daniel Csanady et al.

Summary: An analytic-empirical model was developed to describe heat transfer process in raw straw bulks based on laboratory experiments, testing two different straw types and achieving good agreement between the model and measured thermal conductivities. Optimal bulk densities of two different straw types were found to be similar, with the model considering factors such as solid conduction, gas conduction, and radiation.

Properties of Eco-Friendly Particleboards Bonded with Lignosulfonate-Urea-Formaldehyde Adhesives and pMDI as a Crosslinker

Pavlo Bekhta et al.

Summary: The study found that LS can effectively adjust the pH of LS-UF formulations, and boards bonded with LS-UF adhesive showed similar properties to those bonded with UF adhesive. Substituting UF with LS decreased water absorption and thickness swelling of boards, with NaLS-UF boards having lower formaldehyde content. Increasing pMDI content significantly improved mechanical properties of boards bonded with LS adhesives, while boards bonded with pure UF adhesive exhibited better mechanical properties.

Active Thermal Method Applied to the In Situ Characterization of Insulating Materials in a Wall

Elorn Biteau et al.

Summary: The active method based on power dissipation via flat electrical resistance is introduced for estimating the thermal properties of bio-sourced building wall insulation components. By using a multi-objective approach and inverse method, the characteristics of a two-material assembly can be identified, overcoming the issue of high correlation between thermal parameters in the model.

Life Cycle Assessment of Different Prefabricated Rates for Building Construction

Shaozhe Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that as the prefabricated rate increases, the water footprint decreases, but the total energy footprint and carbon footprint increase. Material extraction is one of the influencing factors, while terrestrial ecotoxicity shows the biggest increase with an increase in the prefabricated rate. The impacts on energy footprint, carbon footprint, and terrestrial ecotoxicity are primarily determined by transport, and are sensitive to transport distance and vehicle types.

Effect of Wood Hemicellulose Composition on Binding Interactions with Caffeine

Klara Kobeticova et al.

Summary: Wood is an important construction material that needs protection from biological pests, with hemicellulose composition playing a role in interactions with chemical substances like biocides. Various sugars in wood have different rates of interactions with the biocidal substance caffeine, suggesting that the structure of sugars in hemicellulose affects binding interactions with caffeine.
