Compressive strength and electrochemical impedance response of red mud-coal metakaolin geopolymer exposed to sulfuric acid

Tiantian Guo et al.

Summary: The performance and degradation mechanism of geopolymer in sulfuric acid solution were studied. With prolonged immersion time, the impedance arc diameter of the geopolymer decreased, and there was a significant correlation between compressive strength and impedance parameters. Microstructural examination indicated that the deterioration of geopolymer was associated with depolymerization of aluminosilicate polymers and destruction of microstructure in acidic media, leading to strength loss.

The effect of pore behavior and gel structure on the mechanical property at different initial water content

Qian Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of initial water content on pore behavior and gel structure of geopolymers by synthesizing geopolymers with different water contents. The results showed that increasing water content led to a significant decrease in compressive strength of geopolymers, as well as the transformation of harmless pores to harmful pores. Additionally, excess water introduced to the geopolymer network resulted in an increase in Q3 structures, leading to a decrease in polymerization degree and mechanical properties of geopolymers.

Effects of mixing duration on engineering properties of geopolymer concrete

Aziz Hasan Mahmood et al.

Summary: Geopolymers have been researched for over 50 years, but their adaptation in construction is still limited. The lack of field application reports is a major reason behind this slow acceptance. More initiatives are needed to study and report field observations to promote the use of geopolymer concrete.

Performance deterioration of fly ash/slag-based geopolymer composites subjected to coupled cyclic preloading and sulfuric acid attack

Fulin Qu et al.

Summary: The study found that GPM experienced more severe deterioration after exposure to different sulfuric acid attacks, which may be due to cyclic preloading causing microcracks or damage in the mortars and increasing the probability of sulfuric acid deterioration.

Sulfuric acid degradation of alkali-activated metakaolin cements supplemented with brucite

Juan Pablo Gevaudan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of alkali content and brucite mineral addition on the acid resistance of alkali-activated metakaolin. Results showed that higher alkali content and brucite addition improved the acid resistance of sodium-stabilized aluminosilicate hydrate framework, primarily through increased Mg+2 retention and Mg-Al interaction. Additionally, brucite addition reduced micro-scale porosity and increased gel pore proportion, indicating potential benefits for Mg+2 retention and Mg-Al coupling.

Strength and Microstructural Analysis of Geopolymer Prepared with Recycled Geopolymer Powder

Wang Xinjie et al.

Summary: The paper presents the strength and microstructural analysis of recycled geopolymer with different substitution rates. The mechanical properties of recycled geopolymers degrade with the increase of substitution rate, forming a looser structure. The study shows that recycled geopolymer specimens with a substitution rate less than 50% meet the requirements for heavy traffic load, while those with 80% substitution rate satisfy the requirements for plastering mortar.

Effects of aggregate types on acid corrosion attack upon fly-Ash geopolymer and Portland cement concretes-Comparative study

B. Pather et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of different types of aggregates on the acid resistance behaviors of fly ash - geopolymer (FA - GPC) and Portland cement (PC) concretes. It was found that FA - GPC concretes showed superior acid resistance compared to PC concretes. The results suggest that granites or siliceous aggregates are suitable for producing acid resistant FA - GPC concretes, while calcareous aggregate types, especially dolomite, are effective in reducing the progression of acid attack upon PC concretes.
