Heating mechanisms in induction welding of thermoplastic composites

Darun Barazanchy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the heat generation mechanisms in thermoplastic carbon composite laminates during induction welding using finite element simulations. The results show that most of the heat is generated in the fiber and thickness directions, with the heat in the fiber direction primarily attributed to Joule heating and the heat in the thickness direction potentially coming from both Joule heating of the polymer and fiber-to-fiber contact resistance heating. The presence of resin has a significant effect on heat generation compared to the contact conditions between fibers.

Static ultrasonic welding of carbon fibre unidirectional thermoplastic materials and the influence of heat generation and heat transfer

F. Kohler et al.

Summary: This study investigated how fiber orientation in plies adjacent to the weld line affects the welding process and appearance of edge defects. Results showed that anisotropic flow and thermal conductivity of plies near the weld line significantly influence edge defect appearance. Using energy directors covering only part of the weld overlap area was developed as a new approach to mitigate edge defects caused by highly directional properties of unidirectional plies.

Numerical Investigation of Residual Stresses in Welded Thermoplastic CFRP Structures

Lukas Nagel et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the temperature distribution and residual stresses in carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) using thermoplastics as the matrix during resistance welding through transient finite element simulations. The welding process affects the component structure, with high residual stresses causing potential microcrack formation in the matrix, which could be critical for the fatigue of welded composite structures. The findings from this study could be crucial for the design process of thermoplastic composite structures.

Improved mechanical properties of resistance welded joints of thermoplastic composites by versatile graphene oxide

Xuhai Xiong et al.

Summary: This study proposed an approach of adding graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets to enhance the joints for resistance welding glass fabric reinforced polyetherimide (GF/PEI) laminates. Through the investigation, it was found that adding an appropriate amount of GO could increase the joint strength, but exceeding the optimal value may result in more vulnerability to damage.
