Tailoring physical properties of WS2nanosheets by defects control

Lei Tao et al.

Summary: Controllable growth of high-quality transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is crucial for device applications, and understanding the growth mechanism of TMDs is important. A comprehensive picture of WS(2) nanosheets growth was proposed through Monte Carlo simulation, and diffusion-limited growth under transition state theory was extended to describe heteroepitaxy growth of WS2. Theoretical results aligned well with chemical vapor deposition results, showing that growth temperature plays a key role in determining samples with varying densities of vacancy defects, which in turn modify the photoluminescence and ferromagnetic behavior.

CVD growth of self-assembled 2D and 1D WS2 nanomaterials for the ultrasensitive detection of NO2

Aanchal Alagh et al.

Summary: This study reports a novel method for the facile synthesis of 2D layered WS2 nanosheets assembled on 1D WS2 nanostructures, enabling ultrasensitive detection of NO2. The WS2 sensors fabricated demonstrate stable, reproducible, and remarkable responses towards NO2 at ppb concentration levels, with high sensitivity and ultra-low detection limits. The material also shows stable responses to NO2 over time, even when operated at room temperature, with humidity cross-sensitivity remaining manageable.

Defect Engineering can Enhance the Electrochemical Performance of WS2 for Thermal Batteries

Fuhua Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, WS2 with sulfur vacancies was successfully prepared and showed improved discharge performance as a cathode material for thermal batteries. The WS2 with sulfur vacancies exhibited higher discharge specific capacity and lower total polarization compared to the original WS2, indicating potential for further research on defect materials as cathodes in thermal batteries.

Nonlinear elastic response of pan based carbon fiber to tensile loading and relations to microstructure

Nathan Meek et al.

Summary: Wide- and small-angle scattering techniques were used to analyze the structure of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) carbon fibers, revealing the relationship between fiber modulus and crystallite dimensions, orientation, and pore structure. The nonlinear elasticity observed in carbon fibers is hypothesized to be caused by elastic planar motion within turbostratic carbon, with implications for tensile loading and deformation mechanics.

Graphene on a hexagonal lattice substrate with on-site Hubbard interaction

J. R. M. Monteiro et al.

Summary: In this study, the dispersion relation of graphene on a substrate with hexagonal lattice structure was investigated using the self-consistent mean field approach, considering on-site Hubbard interactions in the substrate sites. Different Hubbard interactions in the sublattices of the substrate break electron hole symmetry, leading to the opening of two gaps in the dispersion relation of graphene.

Robust and High Photoluminescence in WS2 Monolayer through In Situ Defect Engineering

Qilong Cui et al.

Summary: An in situ defect engineering strategy was reported to reduce the impact of intrinsic sulfur vacancy on tungsten disulfide (WS2) monolayer, resulting in oxygen doped WS2 monolayer with significantly improved optical properties and high PLQY which surpasses mechanically exfoliated counterparts. The method also provides materials with superior environment stability, with the high PLQY lasting up to 3 months under ambient conditions. Insights from first-principle calculations indicate that the enhancement mechanism involves the suppression of nonradiative recombination and conversion from trion to neutral, with excellent stability attributed to repaired saturated coordination bonds at sulfur vacancy sites.

Effect of Cu thickness and temperature on growth of graphene on 8-inch Cu/SiO2/Si wafer using cold-wall CVD reactor

Summary: The growth of graphene on copper thin film using chemical vapor deposition requires a high temperature of 825 degrees Celsius or higher to prevent the formation of isolated Cu islands due to the dewetting mechanism. The sufficiently thick film thickness is necessary to mitigate dewetting, and the graphene grown on a cold-wall reactor is a monolayer without crystal defects.

Summary: In recent years, two-dimensional layered materials have attracted increasing attention due to their abundant categories and superior properties. In order to meet the requirements for highly integrated devices in the post-Moore era, efforts are being made to produce atomically thin 2D materials with large lateral dimensions and high crystalline quality. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is widely used for the synthesis of 2D materials, but flexibly and easily growing any 2D materials into large areas remains a challenge.
