Flax/basalt/E-glass Fibers Reinforced Epoxy Composites with Enhanced Mechanical Properties

M. A. Abd El-Baky et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of flax/basalt/E-glass fibers reinforced epoxy composites were studied in this research, which investigated the effects of fiber relative amounts and stacking sequence on the tensile, flexural, and impact properties. The results showed that replacing partial laminas with basalt and/or glass fiber reinforced epoxy laminas could enhance the tensile, flexural, and impact strengths. Additionally, incorporating high strength fibers to the outer layers of the composite improved flexural and impact resistances, while having the opposite effect on tensile properties.

Combined effects of cyclic/sustained bending loading and water immersion on the interface shear strength of carbon/glass fiber reinforced polymer hybrid rods for bridge cable

Hiran Mayookh Lal et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the combined effects of cyclic/sustained bending loading and water immersion on the interface shear strength of hybrid fiber reinforced polymer rods. It was found that exposure temperature and bending loading levels accelerated the degradation of the rods, with cyclic loading/water immersion having a more significant impact. It is recommended to limit the cyclic bending loading level to 50% to ensure the desirable service life of bridge structures.

Thermoplastic polyurethane composites for railway applications: Experimental and numerical study of hybrid laminates with improved impact resistance

F. Rizzo et al.

Summary: The railway industry has become increasingly focused on weight reduction due to safety and pollution legislations, with carbon fibre-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) identified as having weak out-of-plane properties that hinder their current use in railway applications. This study proposes a method to improve the impact absorption performance of railway composite structures by adding a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) coating to CFRP laminates.

Study on the durability of GFRP bars and carbon/glass hybrid fiber reinforced polymer (HFRP) bars aged in alkaline solution

Yunfeng Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that the remaining interlaminar shear strengths of HFRP bars were larger than that of GFRP bars after being aged in alkaline solution, and deterioration of HFRP bars occurred at the CFRP/CFRP interface in alkaline solution. The long-term interlaminar shear strength of GFRP and HFRP bars aged in alkaline solution was predicted using the Arrhenius theory. The research shows that the CFRP layer enhances the durability of GFRP bars in alkaline environment due to the delayed water and OH- diffusion in CFRP and the better alkaline resistance of CFRP.

Flammability, morphological and mechanical properties of sugar palm fiber/polyester yarn-reinforced epoxy hybrid biocomposites with magnesium hydroxide flame retardant filler

M. J. Suriani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the surface morphology, flammability, and tensile properties of sugar palm fiber (SPF) hybrid with polyester (PET) yarn-reinforced epoxy composite by adding magnesium hydroxide as a flame retardant. The results show that incorporating 35% SPF with magnesium hydroxide as a flame retardant reduces burning rate and increases tensile strength. However, at 50% SPF content, the lack of interfacial bonding between fibers and matrix decreases the tensile properties of the composite.

Effects of rod size and fiber hybrid mode on the interface shear strength of carbon/glass fiber composite rods exposed to freezing-thawing and outdoor environments

Guijun Xian et al.

Summary: Three types of carbon/glass fiber reinforced polymer hybrid rods were developed to study the effects of rod size and fiber hybrid mode on interface shear strength. It was found that the fiber random hybrid mode led to a slight increase in water uptake, and temperature-alternating had a more significant impact on water uptake acceleration factor. Additionally, the increase in rod diameter prolonged the saturated water uptake time.
